TGP V Aftermarket - Clutch

Postby eskimo » Thu Apr 08, 2010 8:13 pm

Hi,

Will be looking to replace my clutch in the next few months and not sure if I should replace it with a TGP kit or go for a slightly stronger after market one.

The car is my daily driver and will be used for track day and gets a bit of stick on the back roads

How do the TGP ones stand up to a bit of abuse or should I just spend the cash on decent after market one?

Also if I go after market any recommendations on brand's ?

Cheers
JH

uprating the pressure plate wouldn't go astray. nuthing silly but a bit more clamping force will help with a bit of abuse. you'd be suprised how normal some 'HD' clutches are to drive day to day.

of course this is within reason, obviously a 3 puk exedy solid centre is going to be a bitch no matter what. lol

TGP friction plate with aheavy duty pressure plate would be good. You could even get a TGP pressure plate uprated if you needed it.

When I was looking at getting the Blacktop in my FXGT, I read somewhere there was a pressure plate with more clamping force from another model (Celica I think, would need to check). Good ol' Toyota able to swap and change parts.

if thats the case stick with the tgp clutch plate and uprate the pressure plate. not sure what too though. mine has 700lb pressure plate but still waiting to drive it.

not sure what standard pressure rating is??

EDIT: crampy beat me to it

On the other hand. Torque is what kills clutches.... and the Blacktop, well..... lets say it's not exactly a torque monster.

What do you use the car for?
My BZ-G had stock driveline and took that to drags a few times without any issues.

Sweet so TGP with an uprated presure plate sounds like the way to go.

The car is mainly used as a daily driver but does a few track days no drag racing

Mines had 50,000km of abuse from me including drags back in the day, as crampy says, they don't really have much torque so its not like the clutch is under much strain  If I replace mine it will be TGP for sure. Unless you put some more horses into it i'm sure it would handle the odd track event too.

Wouldn't a higher rated pressure plate make the clutch pedal harder? Flag that on a 95% daily used car

Yeah it'd depend on the extremities of how much more clamping force you used. when i got my new clutch in the trueno many moons ago it had about 25% more clamping force than standard replacement yet it was quite driveable, pedal pressure wasn't too extreme and that was my then daily driver. All on a 16v 4age woohoo

When I replaced the clutch in the Trueno, I used a TGP plate and a TRD cover. Works very well and if anything made the pedal lighter than the factory one!

Very streetable and is still going strong, I cant remember the exact amount of kms i have done with it, but it was in before my engine rebuild at 124k, the cars now about to hit 170k.

Has had many trips to the drags and a few outings at manfeild without fault.

Food for thought?

Just word of advise: don't go overboard with clutch on 6 speed, as the gearbox is very fragile.

Cheers. Im thinking il just go for the TGP. The car spends most of its time sitting in Auckland traffic

Plus the TGP ones are about half the price of a good aftermarket clutch

Standard Exedy is same as factory. Heavy duty clutches are good though, I like the RPM one I have in my Levin, pedal feel is much the same but it engages much more positively.
