AE86 4agze/w57 issues

Postby tuff86 » Fri Apr 23, 2010 7:49 pm

I have put a ae92 smallport 4agze into my levin using a w57 gearbox with niteparts adaptor, a certain crap shop (on the limit) put the gearbox back in it for me with a 5 puck exedy clutch, i did about 500km with no issues, driving down the road one day and suddenly the clutch wouldn't work, i've pulled the box back out and discovered the centre of the clutch plate has torn away from the puck section, at first i thought it was from too much power but on closer inspection i noticed said shop hadn't put the spigot bearing back in when re-assembling. I got another clutch plate and fresh spigot bearing and set out to fix it, first problem arose: bearing wouldn't fit into the hole at all. I removed the flywheel and used a vernier to discover the hole was/is 5mm too small for the bearing (factory hole is 32mm). Going to all bearing shops on the shore they all said 28mm was the smallest bearing available with a 12mm centre hole (for input shaft w5x & t50) so after going to many shops with no answers i ended up at toyotas galore where the answer would finally be found. After searching through many 4age's i finally spotted it, fwd 4age gearboxes have a shorter input shaft which butts up to the smaller 27mm locator in the crank, whereas the rwd 4age's have a longer input shaft and bigger crank/spigot bearing hole to fit the 32mm bearing, hopefully this all makes sense? My problem is i can't find a 27mm bearing anywhere, i have found out that nissan's use a brass bush but the diameter is only 16 odd mm, has anyone else had this issue and found a decent solution without having to take the crank out and machine the hole to accept the bigger bearing?

IIRC, there has not been a post about any crankshaft differences for this.
Is there an old bearing's outer race still stuck in the crank?

The FWD gearbox does not 'butt up' to the engine at all! The shaft is supported by more then one bearing so doesn't require any support (and will not be touching the engine at all as this would cause big problems) whereas a RWD T50 or W5X has only one bearing for the input shaft so needs a spigot bearing to support it.

I don't think there are any 4age cranks that won't take a spigot bearing. You may need to look closer and see if there is something in the end of the crank. If it was an auto it may have a locator that would have centralised the torque converter.

sorry, by butt up i meant locate, there is nothing stuck in the end at all, will have another look at the insides of a fwd auto box to see if there's a locator bush type thing, thanks for all the advice, dying to get it up and running again, too much fun to have it gathering dust up on axle stands

something is a miss, all 4ages i have put into rwd from FWD have all taken the spigot with no problem, there should not be any differences in 4age crank spigot holes,
go to Toyota and ask them for a ae86 spigot, measure it, compare,

same here, infact the ae86 and supra (with w series box) take the same spigot bearing

Yeah thats the odd thing, all 4age cranks have a 32mm spigot bearing hole, even the atlantic spec cranks, i have just found a fwd auto box and noticed a funny looking sleeve on the engine side of the converter so will whip one off and try on my setup, second stop on my shore wide mission was to toyota and their diagrams had no listing for any ae92 or older spigot bearing, newer (20v) engines still had the 32mm bearing hole in crank. Hopefully that auto shaft sleeve does the trick, i'm itching to let rip in the old girl once again

I used a Nachi bearing for my setup

yeah i got a 6001 bearing from auckland bearings, its a 28mm o.d whereas i need 27mm, not overly keen to die grind a mm out of the crank, hence the bearing will most likely end up in the bin

There must be something in the hole, it should go straight in.

Just hit it with some emery tape, might be a little corrosion build up or something

1mm of corrosion is pretty epic. Are you able to take photos at all of said crank?

If its still a serious headach your best bet is to go to an engineers machine shop and get them to machine you a brass spigot.

I would do it for you tomorrow if you gave me the dimensions but i am on block course for the next 2 weeks so have no access to machines/material.

Whats the likelyhood of 1mm being exact?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, i went back to the auto gearbox and found that the collar had an o.d of around 18mm so i'll have to get the brass spigot made, have had several pairs of eyes check my issue and all have said there's nothing stuck in there and no corrosion, its quite annoying that such a small problem is all thats preventing my baby from hitting the road again, its by far the most fun car i've ever owned (count is up to 45 at moment) or even driven in general, 200rwkw and 900 odd kg make for seriously entertaining moments

still dosn't solve the riddle as to why you needed a 'custom' item. are you sure it is a 16v crank? and not an 8v 4AC (which may be smaller in the spigot?)?????
