White smoke after boost

Postby ee904age » Sun Apr 25, 2010 5:52 pm

My SW20 seems to have an issue. If I start it up and let it idle up to temp, its fine, runs great. After taking it for a short drive (even 200m) and letting it idle again, it starts blowing white smoke/moisture. It developes after 10-20 seconds of idling after driving. It doesnt seem to do it if I drive off boost and nana it, only after boosting. I was thinking BHG, but wouldnt it smoke/steam the whole time???

I dont know the history of the motor, but after putting it in the car and getting it running, I left it with no coolant for about 2 months. Starting it occasionally and running for up to 2 mins at a time whilst moving it to mow the lawn. This wouldnt have got it hot enough to blow gasket would it?

Im not looking forward to doing a head gasket if thats the case. Is that an engine out job on these???

Is it white smoke or steam? If in doubt, hold a piece of something flat, wood for example, on an angle against the exhaust. If it's steam, after a short while youll have water running off the piece of wood....

What's that going to prove? Water is a product of combustion.

Sure you'll get water as a byproduct of combustion but you'll get sh|tloads more if the HG's blown and you're getting water into the combustion chamber....

HAHA - true!

Yeah, I know. I was just suggesting an easy way to possibly test for it. I've never done it myself - just thought of it on the spot. So it may not even work lol

Nope, im getting my done along with new pistons and rings this week.

New head gasket $166 from Toyota
OEM Quality NPR Pistons and Rings $220NZ (full set of 4)
Water Pump (always pays to do) $120 from Toyota
3sgte gasket set (full) $160NZ from eBay

Youre only looking at $700 in parts.

Labour is the killer about $1500-$1800 to get head off, do a bore hone, install all the bits etc.

+ some sundries (new oil and filter, new coolant)

add another $250 if you wanted to do the bigend bearings as well which would pay.

Still cheaper than pulling the motor or buying a second hand motor of unknown condition, or buying another MR2 Turbo with high km engine.
