Yup, it'll be a worn rubber o-ring.

There is also a seal (or two?) inside the shaft, an normally this is where it is leaking from.

Yeap, oring on the outside of the shaft, and/or a seal on the inside.
iirc the seal is not sold by toyota, but is a common seal.

unfortunately that FAQ is for a smallport dizzy, which has a press on drive gear. my spare bigport dizzy looks to have a pin through the bottom of the drive gear to hold it in place... and i'll be buggered if i can get it out. anyone actually done this?

Just a roll pin isn't it?
Press it out and get a new one at the same shop you get the seal from.
I did it to my aw11 dizzy, but is so long ago I can't really remember any details... Which suggests it was very easy!

looks like it, the ends possibly slightly mushroomed. tried to get it out with a chisel, probably not my smartest moment. slightly $&#$%, will see what a 20 ton press can do about it :D

some people drill the pin out or partly drill it out and punch it through.

File/grind off the peened/mushroomed end, then a drift punch to get it to move, then a pin punch to push it the rest of the way through.
