20v black top issues

Postby eskimo » Wed Apr 28, 2010 11:52 pm

Ive been having a few issues with my AE111 corolla, they are being a pig to drive when cold... hesitation etc, and an odd miss at between 2500-3000rpm(a light jerk) when on light throttle

Ive searched the forum and come up with the following

-Check for fault codes
-clean the IBT's
-bung O2 sensor
-ignition, plugs leads etc

Ive got a bit of time on my hands this weekend and so hoping to track down what it is, is there anything else I should be looking at? Also in regards to checking for fault codes what are the two terminals i need to connect? TE1 & TE2...

Also have an issue with what I think is the release bearing, there is a rattle from the gearbox when the clutch is released & not under load. Goes away when I but the clutch in, could this be anything else?

Cheers
Jordon

Thanks, ive read that thread several times. Just wondering if there was anyone who found anything further on it.

Also in regards to the rattle from the gearbox, is that likly to be the released bearing?

Cheers JH

nah thats the input shaft bearing. check your gearbox oil they usually make a little bit of noise but not a rattle

Cheers, was going to check it tonight as the gearbox seems a little notchy sounds a bit dry so hoping its not really low. The rattle has been there a few weeks... i assumed it was the release bearing

Think ill drain it completly in the weekend and fill with new oil, any recomendations on the oil for the 6speed. I was going to go for a castrol syntrax 80-90(i think, could be 75-90) or valvalene dura gear 75-90

Syntrax is the right oil for that gearbox (not sure about valvoline).

Knock sensor is another common problem with similar symptoms.

deffinatly would throw a code...

this is why the capacitor issue is thought of becuase it doesnt throw codes... but a really dip before going closed loop...

Well sort of solved the problem, replaced the plugs and cleaned the itbs... and its a lot better than it was.. waiting on a my O2 sensor to arrive so will replace that once received

Also replaced my gearbox oil with castrol syntrax 75w-90(only cost me $15 per L...step dads work are castrol agents) and WOW what a difference good oil makes
