A frame legalities

Postby d1 mule » Wed Apr 28, 2010 10:35 pm

hey all, iv got a A frame made up for my race car and have been using it to get to and from the track etc for about a year now but hav never really known if its legal or not.

iv done a little bit of research and get both ends of the stick some say yes and some say no.

and in Section 19 of the Traffic Regulations 1976 it goes on saying that a motor viehicle that is being towed (not under its own power) it is not classed as a trailer so im lost

any hels appreciated

From what I understand it still needs to have rego and wof on an A frame.

think it can be reg'd as a trailer, just have to have a trailer plug that operates the lights etc in the car being towed

All of the above is wrong.

A vehicle under tow is exempt from requiring either registration or wof.

A vehicle has an engine that can power it, so can never be registered as a trailer.

Basically if you're towing a car, and it's safe (ie: nothing falling off it), and your a-frame is doing the job, then you're sweet. It is totally legit that you can do so.

I did my homework on this for Revhead a month or two ago ... if he's still got his PM of that stuff, then he can copy and paste that (once he's taken out all the stuff where I call him a small town goatshagger anyway).

I'm pretty sure I don't have it myself, but I'll go look in my sent pms.

Here's what I sent to Revhead ...

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/facts ... nsing.html

Quote:
When is a vehicle exempt?
The following information explains the different classes of vehicle exemptions.

Exempt from being registered
The following vehicles are exempt from being registered and licensed for road use:

vehicles used on a road that is closed temporarily by a local authority or other body, for holding special events
powered vehicles that are temporarily being towed without the use of their own power
trailers designed exclusively for agricultural operations and used on the road only to or from a farm, or for inspection, servicing or repair
trailers being towed by exempt Class B vehicles.

Vehicles exempted from licencing under this category are also automatically exempt from WoF.

Revhead then asked me more questions, because the generic page is talking about types of exemption you apply for... I replied with:

Exempt A and B vehicles a specific usage category, and require you to change rego category on your car.

The quote I gave you is covering vehicles that are automatically exempted.

One would assume you value the back of the car being towed and wish it not to be crashed into, thus lights would be a good idea :)

that is true and i would assume you need a link for the lights and indicators for it to be towed otherwise its illegal?

That website is so confusing and so hard to find info on....
eg, there is a clause below that says:
Exempt Class A and B vehicles are not necessarily exempt from WoF or CoF requirements.

And it doesn't really explain much further than that....
So i'ts very hard to find the exact paragraphs (I haven't yet) to point to that say you are allowed to.

Could make up a wooden board with all the lights which can be attached to the rear of the towed vehicle and a cable connecting to the normal trailer plug?

Would save having to wire in the towed cars lights.

This also will stop idiots thinking that it is just normal car and try to squeeze in between (happened to me once while was rope-towing with blinkers and all).
