power steering problems

Postby deaf_rattle » Sun May 02, 2010 9:56 pm

Having problems with my 7mgte/ma61 power steering system.
It seems to throff up and overflow from time to time.
We have tried running from left to right etc to try and bleed the system, with the engine on and engine off, but it doesnt seem to make much difference.
The system makes a pretty horrible sound as well.

What is the correct way to bleed the system and does it sound like the pump is buggered?

cheers

Well it could be the pump is buggered, or it could be that over the time of inactivity it has moisture in it.
Try new fluid (maybe couple of times).
Alternatively you could disconnect the return pipe, put it in the bucket and put new fluid in inlet pipe until the noise stops.

cant see the reservoir very well in your pics so i might be off base,

is reservoir sealed? or does it have a breather?
does the pump make noise when steering wheel isnt moved?
is the reservoir higher than the pump
is the belt configuration correct, ie not driving pump backwards

do you have the pump suction line coming out of the bottom of the reservoir?
the pump outlet (smaller hose) goes to the rack
from the rack through the cooler back to reservoir

normally they self bleed easily,
if not i usually idle engine and slowly turn steering wheel from lock to lock 3-4 times making sure the oil level doesnt drop.

It has a breather,
doesnt make any noise when not turning the wheel
When wheels off ground, only makes noise when at hard lock. wheels on ground noise when turning
Reservoir is higher than pump, belt configuration is correct.
Pump suction is from bottom of reservoir

Will check to see where the cooler is plumped in

Just a thought. Does the return enter the resevoir at a funny angle causing a swirl like in a plug hole and therefore sucking more down?

just put the stock reservoir back on... noise has all but gone and no overflow

fluid still looks abit foamy, but that might disappear after abit more running.

So now i need to either make a new bracket for the stock unit, or get another reservoir made up to replace the new one i had made.

hmmm.

Looks like Adrian and Malcolm were onto it.
