Fuels 98 and up :D

Postby Dopamean » Wed May 05, 2010 12:33 pm

Just a quick question, is there any reason I should not be running the bio fuel from Gull?

There is a disclaimer that I only noticed after I started to full up my tank, the upside was this fuel was noticeably better than Mobil or BP's 98 octane.

The disclaimer just says to check before using the fuel as it may not be good for all vehicles being a bio fuel 10% ethanol.

Thoughts on using this in a 20v Blacktop, I'm assuming the better the fuel the better for this type of engine?

plays havoc with foam filled race tanks etc and some older rubber fuel lines.. also it can tend to 'clean out' your fuel tank which normally means the crap will end up in your fuel filter.

Suggestions i have seen reccomend running a couple of tanks through the car then replacing the filter asa bit of a precaution.

AFAIK ethanol has a lower energy density than gasoline, so you should be losing power if anything.

(A really AFAIK, I have to google again I can't remember exactly)

Edit: here we go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_effic ... nt_of_fuel
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

but, it has higher ocatne doesn't it? meaning the car will run it's full advance rather than a knock sensed lower timing,
and should have more power and economy.?>?

But motors are pretty shit house at actually using petrol's energy. Heaps of it gets wasted, thermal efficiency etc. So who cares if the gull stuff has a bit less.

the ron rating is still 98, chances are they use a cheaper grade fuel and add the ethanol to boost to 98.

more power less economy, as you need more alcohol than petrol......
So the price goes up, and you use more

More power from the same quantity = more economy

You use alot more fuel useing biofuel. In our Targa car we use at least 50% more fuel and in classes like the mini class and TRS they have had to put bigger fuel tanks in with reported 1.8x the usage. Now how is that a green fuel??

On a side note, Avgas is no longer allowed to be used in MSNZ events from july/august this year

yeah but you use more alcohol than petrol, so your using more fuel, not the same amount. the higher the alcohol content in the fuel, the more fuel you use.

While you can make more power running on alcohol, you also use a lot more. Eg drag cars often run roughly twice as much alcohol as they would if running on petrol.

Well I will post back here to let you know if the fuel last as long or less.
I full my tank religiously every fortnight as that what a full tank of gas gets me, carjam says I only average 30ks a day (I live fairly central in Auckland, plenty of sitting in traffic).

So that’s the way I gauge it, if I need to refuel earlier than that it obviously does not go as far.

On a side note Mobil no longer allows people to fill there cars from so many drive offs, it stinks......
