Are forged pistons REALLY worth it?

Postby Adoom » Sun May 09, 2010 2:57 pm

So yeh, I had this thought. If an engine running high boost does not pink/detonate/knock, what is the point of running forged pistons?
I intend to rebuild a CA18DET I have, to replace the CA18ET currently in THE STARVIA.
I am tossing up whether or not I NEED forged pistons. I could buy a LINK for the price of a set of "forgies"!! 8O
I will be running water injection which reduces the risk of detonation by lots.
I want to be able to run decent boost with little risk of failure.
If little brother ~SlideWays~ can make 212kw with a 4AGTE..... where the $&#$% is my lots of Kw?

it would depend on the quality of the std pistons.

Factory toyota GZE pistons are very good.

Forged pistons give you a bigger margin for error. If you're running right at the limit of what is safe for your engine, even something as simple as a slightly bad batch of fuel could introduce fatal detonation.

Plus there is only so much a standard cast piston can take...though its usually quite a bit of HP.

Doesn't the 4agze have forged pistons standard anyway?

Get a 4age.

As far as I know SR20DET's and 4G63's aren't forged and with a good tune they all seem ok with 200kw's.

Does the CA18DET have oil squirters?

CA18DET will make 200wkw on the stock internals with no drama. Silvia/Pulsar T28 with supporting mods will see you close to that. They're pretty beefy little engines. No need for water injection at that level unless it's being tuned by a muppet.

Yep CA18 has oil squirters and a crank girdle...and is built like a brick shithouse.

Oil squirters = CHECK
Crank Girdle = NOPE
Early FWD CA18DET do not have the girdle. I have one of those.... But I have a girdle from another RWD CA18DET I had years ago, I should have kept the rest of it too.

What is your CA out of? My old CA18DET in an 88 RNU12 Bluebird had a crank girdle and I'm pretty sure they're one of the first CA18DET's?

Not sure. I got it from an engine importers off trademe.
I think I read in a forum that some of the U11 Bluebirds had them.
Mine has a crossover inlet manifold rather than a reversed....$&#$% it.

Id buy a link and pay for a decent tune way before I brought forged pistons,
Det will break a land on a forged piston as well as a cast one, it will just stand up to a shit tune a little longer, have seen over 500hp on standard sr20 pistons and ca one's will be fine. Buy a g4, get a decent tune and it will last way longer than a well built, but badly tuned forged motor
Current ride: Sweeeeet Hiace. 3L power!!!!
Project: AW11 4agte, 410kw 555hp on 26psi
11.1 @ 125.5mph with more to come, As seen in Aug 2011 Performance Car, haha

Thats exactly what ive done, $220 for a full set of cast pistons and rings (NPR\Teikin) Brand.

Aiming for a safe tune and 200-220 RWKW
