AE92 Blacktop Conversion

Hey, i'm thinking about putting a 20V blacktop into my AE92 Trueno, was wondering if there is anything i should look out for before I go ahead with this idea?

Have a search, its been done plenty of times now. Only tricky bit is the wiring.

Theres a few things, like radiator etc but its all been covered before.

Can I ask why you're going with a blacktop? I really regret as much fun as it putting a blacktop in my AE92. If I could go back I would have gone with a 4AGZE just for the mere fact that in the future when you get bored with it you have so much more scope for modification.

Yeah I read your thread earlier... Umm, smallport redtop 4AGE is on it's way out at the moment, and thinking of replacing it with a blacktop rather than a 4agte/ze because im 18 and insurance compannies dont tend to like 18 year olds with turbo/supercharged vehicles... And I think a blacktop will meet my needs for the next few years.

just silvertop it and be done with it. good suspension and brakes will see you with a wicked fun car to drive.

the wiring from blacktop > ae92 is not that difficult, we are having more issues getting blacktop into ae101!

whynot did his whole ae92 BT conversion in a long weekend so not that time consuming.

ive got a good running blacktop that im tempted to swap into our AE101 FXGT to replace the tired silvertop, rather than me just blowing up another blacktop in my AE92 FXGT


mostly the ae101 fusebox needs to rewired to the ae111 BT. some wires are routed quite differently like the starter relay. we had to add an extra relay in and run some extra wires from the ignition connector. and then all the body connector from the ecu (4-5 wires) and the dash inputs; water temp, oil press, alternator light etc.

i am quite lucky as mark (whynot) is helping me with the wiring as a perk and he knows what hes doing.

you would want all the bits sitting there as so far it has probably cost me close to 3k to get this far. that was from a 4afe though so needed gbox/clutch etc.

If your worried about insurance, insurance companies will still be iffy about engine conversions. Just go for the GZE. Its much more city friendly and you can get more power with pullies.
And if the supercharger does let go, spend a couple of grand and go for a turbo.

Ive done this in that order. Been 6 months with the turbo on an unopened 150k motor and its been sweet.
Car has seen the occasional 17psi aswell.

For the price of buying a blacktop and parts etc to do it, possibly just buying an AE111 or even a 101 would be a better option.
Probably more insurance friendly than a conversion.

Then again if you specificly want a project car then buy a cheap runabout, take the 92 off the road and go gze/turbo or whatever floats your boat.
That way you can take more time and do it right, not have to rely on something your working on to get you around, and when it's all done, you can maybe insure it for limited mileage as a weekend/fun car.

you'll probably find insurance will cost just as much with the blacktop with the ZE. Either way its going to be an engine conversion so will cause issues with insurance. Try ringing it around and pricing it up?

I just told AA that I had my engine shat itself so I replaced it with a more "modern and efficient" engine from a later model car, which really is the truth!

thats an awesome idea. i should try that.

don't decide what you want to do with your car cause of gay insurance which you pay once a year but if you don't do what you really want you will pay for it every day when you drive it. i say modify your car the way YOU want it and get the most affordable/caring insurance from there.
got quoted $700ish a year for the BT conversion in my car along with all the seats, stereo and koni adjustables and everything. in my opinion that is quite reasonable for full insurance. wouldn't pay anything close to a grand though would tell insurance to GFU

I'm planning a 6 month or so engine build as i'm at uni at the moment, don't have too much spare time, a GZE may be on the cards, however, sourcing a reasonable condition GZE motor maybe a little more trickier than a low km blacktop.

Your local Japanese parts importer will be able to sell you a complete low mileage half cut for less than $3,000. Then just swap everything over.
Advisable to get AE92 because of stronger pistons etc...

Or do i what i did, and sell your Corolla, and buy one with all the work done.

more fun to drive and fuel economy is better than the 4af. For my insurance I just rang and told them Id put a fuel injected
motor in of the same displacement and it didn't change my insurance
at all.

yeah true i'd rather be upfront and pay a lil more than get stung when you need it!

if you are at uni then be aware that do your budget to allow for any foreseeable expenses, and then add another 1k - i only added 500 extra:( . its holding up my project bigtime cause even though i work 10hrs a week part time, i don't have a decent income to get little bits and pieces along the way, buying happens in big chunks and this normally isn't how a project goes its just little thing after another that you need to get that holds you up.

ignoring arguments between ST & BT... surely the price of an ae101 ST ftw... pretty cheap these days.... especially if you are still at uni! ae101s ST's make ok runabouts but I guess at the sacrifice of power...

yeah true but keep in mind most ST's are almost a good 20yrs old now! there hasn't got too many good ones left. i thought i may as well pay a little more and eliminate some of the risk of getting a lemon. :lol:

You can't eliminate any of that :wink: Any engine is only as good as its servicing history. No matter how old it might be :)
