which is the signal and which is the earth for aftermarket ecu's the blue or the black or doesnt it matter

It matters because the -ve(B-W) wire is common between the two sensors.

Might I suggest you would get more replies if you didn't refer to them as VR sensors. Most people would have no idea that VR stands for Variable Reluctance (magnetic) and wonder why the ST215 uses Virtual Reality sensors ;)

ok sorry, i am using a megasquirt with the black wires earthed, is this ok?
