Clutch Recommendations for ST205

I am about to replace the clutch in my ST205 with something a little more heavy duty.

what sort and where can i purchase a good general street clutch with price in consideration?

I got my Spec Stage 3 with shipping for less than a rebuilt stocker here in NZ...

they only list clutches for the MR2 3SGTE's but i think twolitre was saying they were the same as the ST205's?

We've sold a lot of TRD clutches for GT4. Seems our price is pretty close to the std item.

Yep I think you will find all 3sgte clutches are the same.

Just buy a TRD mettalic facing clutch plate and a TRD clutch cover. diss1dent and myself both have these clutches from TRD Man. They are nice n grabby and hold like shit to a blanket :wink:

is there much difference between the sports facing type and the metal facing type ?

Both plates are very 'driveable'. The metal faced plate is designed primarily for motorsport use but is often used by people who like to drive perhaps a little harder than others or enter the occasional event.
The sports type clutch plate is adequate for most people who only use their car for regular street use. It's significantly cheaper.

not sure how it compares on price, but I have a clutch from Master Part/Race Brakes/0800 BRAKES and so far it's been mint for me, I've done heaps of hard launches (4-7K clutch dumps), including a couple of heavy work outs on the strip and so far it hasn't slipped once or caused any problems. Cost $750, it's got a stronger pressure plate and a new disk with kevlar friction material.

Here goes (resuscitation on what seems to be a dead thread) but does anyone know where to get this stuff from "TRD mettalic facing clutch plate and a TRD clutch cover" or even any better recommendations I'm at the moment looking at something along the Exedy range but would like some guidence i guess, same car ST205

Would that make it the Sports tuff heavy duty, that was the clutch I was looking at (mainly cause of the exedy chart) but a local supplier said for 50 more I should get the race spec with metal something and organic blah blah but I wonder how relivent the chart is cause I don't want to loose to much drivability,
I guess new questions are
does the sports tuff cope with the occasional caining, and
how is the drive with the clutchs in the "race" bracket

i had clutch issues then i got mine rebuilt by neil at autoclutch and my problems were gone, send ur old clutch and flywheel in and get it rebuilt with a heap more clamp and kevlar plate for driveability and shot peened flywheel too, was a dam good price too but i wont go into prices as thats got my into trouble in the past ;)

but yea give neil a ring

Had an Autoclutch 4 puck metallic with spring, pretty rough in start / stop traffic and wears flywheels and pressure plates down. But damn it bites.
Around ~$350 for the clutch friction plate only.
No complain of product, infact I still have the friction disc in the spares bin, after a lot of events and about 20,000kms, it has about 40% meat left.

I also bought a TRD pressure plate and TRD kevlar full face from TRD Hong Kong (A lot cheaper over there). I wanted something a bit more tame, car shaking etc on start / stop traffic is getting annoying. Not a very good racing clutch, just a tad firmer than stock, definitely 100% streetable, you'd think it's just a "stock clutch in a sporty car". It still transferred the power to the ground, but I wouldn't buy it unless you're looking for 100% streetability and your car is only lightly modified.

Around ~$500 for the set (I can't remember exactly, it was many years ago).
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Just to reopen this thread, whats the damage on getting a clutch kit installed on a st205 (heard it's a real bitch)?

Any recommendations on where to get this done?

Easiest way to do it is to remove the engine. It *is* possible to do it without removing the engine but it'll take longer and result in a lot of hair pulling. Since the engine's coming out you may as well do some other stuff that's hard/impossible to do in place (oil seals, cambelt if it's coming up, waterpump , aux belts etc)

Any [reputable] mechanic should have no trouble doing the job (stick with MTA places, from past experience it's a lot easier if something goes wrong). The job should take about a day to do.

its not hard if you take the moter out but its is time comsuming. i once got a price to get my st185 done with a stock repco clutch and it was something like $1200 i cant realy remember was a while ago now. its a day to a day an half job they say. but i can do a clatch in my st205 in a day only help being lifting off and on the gearbox, but in saying that my car dosent have as much crap on as stock.

as for doing seals and cam belt ect, rear main defanitly seeing as the gearbox it off but everything else is realy easy to do in place

BTW car goes up, motor goes down with subframe. Easiest way to pull motor out of GT4.

If car is standard I would recommend getting standard clutch (TGP).

Don't attempt at removing just the gearbox.

So Anth you seem to be pretty clued as to what to do, I'm due for a clutch replacement pretty soon, I can get a clutch kit and everything, what do you suggest I do about getting the work done?

well it depends if you want to take it somewhere to get it done or weather you have some mates that can help and know what they are doing.

i have mates that know how to work cars, but they have no idea about an st205, so would rather take it somewhere to get it done. any recommendations for somewhere in auckland?
