4afe droping crank

Postby 79rolla » Fri May 21, 2010 3:16 pm

hey, iv got to drop the crank out of an auto 4afe fxzi ae92 corolla that has run a big end, already have sump and cross member out, looking at it will it be easier to pull the motor off the box so i can get the flexi plate out as the box is sitting VERY close to the chassis rail and would need to drop the box quite a bit, but there is quit a bit of room between the pulleys and the body on the other side, and looks like there is enough slack in most wires/hose's so i wont have to disconnect much

am i overlooking anything major?

Are you trying to take the crank out while keeping the trans and block in the car?

You cannot take the crank out without taking gearbox out.
Think of the flywheel is kind of in the way (and rear main seal housing).

yes i'm trying to do it while its in the car, if i split the box off of the motor and take the torque converter and flexi plate off i could get the crank out, or am i trying to complicate it too much and just drop the box out?

Take the engine and gearbox out and stick the engine on a stand. It will be easier, quicker, less frustrating, and you'll make less mistakes.

You've probably heard it a lot, but why replace the crank, when for the price of a set of shells, a crank regrind and perhaps a new rod, you could replace the motor? I replaced a 4AFE in a Marino that had thrown a rod, pretty sure the owner only paid about $300 for it with startup warranty and not that many km.

But yes, easier to take the whole lot out.

take the engine and box out,
then take the box off,
and sit engine on a stand or upside down,

chances if its run a big end bad enough to have to replace crank, that the conrod will be stuffed,
easiest way to tell is if the rod is 'blacker' than the rest replace it

making so much more hard work for your self trying to do it in place

flexi plate has to come off, rear oil seal housing has to come off,
pulleys, timing belt, front cover has to come off etc
