After watching Rally Portugal Highlights I just came in my pants a little, According to WRC Toyota are sending people to rally Portugal to decide weather they can re-enter the WRC

Oooooooooooooooooh, please, In fact I'm stoked if there are more than 2 manufacturers competing in the WRC at this stage

Toyota are definitely keen on WTCC.
I suppose some crossover is possible as they were chaning the rules to make both cars similar. Ie same engines. So who knows...
However Toyota are looking for value for $$ in motorsport and at the moment the WTCC kicks WRC butt in that

It appears to be some guys from the old F1 team (TTE) hoping to keep their jobs... Maybe. As they themselves say, there was no order or anything from Toyota HQ to look into it.
So maybe on the back of the desicion to look into the WTCC they those guys are looking to see if they can swing things that was as well.
Well, imo anyway

This is exciting.. Maybe for Toyota, but not so much for the young fans that want to own the cars. There is no requirement to homologate WRC cars anymore and even if they do, The price tag of the new car will be cost prohibitive for most of us for the next 10 years :(

I wonder what the car would be anyways? A Corolla? Boo, new Celica please!

I cant say I could have afforded the $90,000+ dollars a homolgated celica cost when they brought out the 185 and 205 either..... :?

There is very much a requirement to homologate WRC cars presently as there always has been and likely always will be.

I imagine what you are meaning is that there is no requirement to produce hundreds or thousands of homologation specials (replicas) in order for the present WRC cars to be eligible.

I am sure that Warwick is quite correct. This write up is merely describing a watching brief by TTE staff to stay abreast of present situations if Toyota should decide to follow that path.

Most companies involved in race & rally car production would do likewise as an everyday course of business.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Rally_Car...

However, unlike Group A, manufacturers are no longer required to build "Homologation Specials" in order to meet approval. The base model need not have the characteristics of the WRC car, as evidenced from cars such the Peugeot 206, 307, Citroën Xsara and Škoda Fabia, which have no road car variant with a turbocharged petrol engine or four wheel drive.

Ever seen a factory built Corolla 4x4 powered by a 3S-GTE for sale to the general public for use on the roads?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homologation

Homologating does not mean you have to make thousands, it means you have to do X to meet the rules malers requirements.
WRC cars are still Homologated. As in the design and probably a prototype is presented to the FIA to ensure it meets the rules. And also to serve as a template for future cars to ensure they are the same.

Forcing makers to make so many of a special car was the reason Group A died, as well as other various formulas through out the years.

The thing I was getting at is the homologation specials, The WRC car being based on a car that you could walk into a dealer and purchase if you had the coin for it.

Thanks for the correction.
