I think this is exactly right.
And inexperienced drivers.

If you are insured with NAC or Club auto (one of the two, can't remember which) you can pay to do a course on either hampton downs or taupo race track and they teach you driving techniques in YOUR car. Also once completed it lowers you insurance per year.

I think things like that are a good option for young people to build up their driving skills, but should be made compulsary.

Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Speaking of bad roads; did anyone else see the interveiw of a lady on tv1 news talking about the crash up north where a car went off the road doing 130ish k? Was in a 50 or 70 k zone too. The lady blatently blamed the roads for the accident and even included "you come along at speed" in her interveiw


words that she said may vary, but it was something like that and it was a couple days ago, can't remember everything i see on tv word for word

seriously i see it every day a young 18 yr old comes into my shop in a ____________________ (insert import here) and they have no experience on the road at all. if you restrict these vehicles to full liceneced driveres only then you are going to solve some problems.

there is no way you can argue against that.

Yes i seen that to wasnt she the mother of one of the kids that got killed? What an absolute muppet the road looked perfectly fine to me, but i have never driven it but if it was that bad any normal person would drive to the condtions!!!!!

If the roads were better designed and built, they might have, but somehow, I don't think thats the biggest factor in this situation! :?

130kmh in a 50 zone does!!

Again with roads.
NZ roads are fine.
Just don't lower the car and run tyres with normal sidewall.
Drive to the conditions! You cannot have perfect roads.
And even with perfect roads, have you noticed how many scrapes are on centre barrier on straight on Auckland motorway? I think most of Auckland motorway is fine but somehow people manage to put massive scrapes in centre barrier anyway. That has to say something.

lower center of gravity = better road holding capabilitys.
sidewall of tyre - I dont see how this effects the road holding capabilitys.

I have driven hundreds of different cars over the years, and find that when a car has those things done to it it holds the road better than a standard car.

1) lowering car incorrectly (superlow springs, or even cut springs) will result in shorter suspension travel and would put shocks in non-working range. If non-captive springs are used consequences can be very dire.
2) Low side wall + pot hole = burst tyre and/or damaged/split wheel
3) Tyre side wall is part of suspension, messing with that and that makes the car handle worse.
4) Centre of gravity does not help if you are hitting the bump stop frequently.
5) Lowering the car incorrectly (by employing mentioned above methods) increases bump steer which is much more dangerous than body roll.
6) Body roll is not inherently bad, having too stiff suspension can be a very dangerous thing.

I agree with this, Ive driven most of Nz's roads and most well before major road improvements have taken place. Why has the road toll on younger people risen over the years? Mentality and driver training is a factor, but the roads are better, the cars are faster.

Yeah, most of the time car is lowered incorrectly. Because people don't see value in spending $3000 on adjustable suspension, while they can get springs fitted for $300 (or $4 p/w deal). They don't bother with even changing the shocks. Even if they had bumstops in there, they will fall out in no time making the bloody thing extremely dangerous on un-even road.

There is a reason why car come with their suspension as they are. It is safer in stock form.

People claim they can brake better without ABS, they can corner faster with race suspension. Here is the newsflash: most of the time when you are on the road you are not in the race mode. When you are on the track you are a lot calmer (well, at least I am) and expect things to go certain way. When you drive from A to B if something happens you are in panic mode. When you are in panic mode you are far better with ABS and softer suspension.

Yep, roads are certainly not bad. I have also driven most of NZ (the only area I haven't driven in is Dunedin/Invercargil area and Nelson area, every thing else from Cape Reigna to Milford Sound has been covered by me).

Over the years I have seen more and more idiots with their cap backwards and seats reclined in sleeping position, doing stupid shit and trying to race from the lights. I blame hip hop culture and F&F movies that inspire these sheeple.

I would have to agree with the above statement even though i am a huge fan of the "slamed" look, you just cant do that on the normal roads, on a race track is a different story but even then you need a decent amount of travel in the suspension. Im definitely no expert, i have had many lowered cars with adjusties, super low springs ect, but none of them compared to the amazing handling as my stock sti subaru. It showed me that there are so many other factors you have to consider when modifying suspension. Car companys spend millions on developing suspension ect and for some young kid to come along and spend $1000 or whatever on adjustables because he or she thinks he is some expert is a disaster waiting to happen.

Bullshit that roads don't make a difference. Most of the roads on NZ have corrigations all over the place, uneven surfaces, crap patchwork to fix them up and off camber.

Take a look at the roads they produce in Japan and a lot of Euro countries and THEN come back and say our roads aren't shit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the roads are solely to blame when they're doing 130kph in a 50kph zone, but they sure don't help!

Just look how surprisingly well the Suzuki Leana does on Top Gear track, considering lack of power of that thing.

We have some average roads down here, but you drive to the speed limit and its not an issue.
