this morning i let it idle for 10 min before i left, its a high idle 'cause of the auto-choke. the gauge reached just over 'C'.

after work today i whipped out the thermostat to check if there were leaks around it, there were none as i had used Loctite 518 to seal it but water was coming through the jiggle pin. so ive siliconed up the jiggle pin and around the thermostat so no water can get past till the themostat opens.

demisting the windows is the primary goal, but compared to other(newer) cars ive driven its very slow to warm up.

ill give the window a clean as per strx7's instructions and ill see how it warms up 2morrow now ive sealed it up.

sounds like a wrong or borked thermostat.

Pot of cold water + string + element = test.

BHG

Someone had to... Steve must be busy.

But seriously, I never idle anything I drive to warm it up, driving it semi-nice seems to warm it up the fastest, get the oil pumping too. Wouldn't have thought long idling would be good for it.

Block off the radiator and wrap the engine in insulation... the car would only be good for driving for 5 minutes from cold though

You could install an electric heater/blower and get warm air from start, this may require a bigger alternator though. I think some flasher cars have electric heaters so maybe parts off a wreck could work.

my bmw does, instant heat from vents and seats and steering wheel, and hot/cold fridge,

could the cause be from blocked water jackets/passages in the engine?

That was a possibility i considered and due to the age of the engine quite likely. I may have to run a radiator flush through it a few times and see what happens.

blocking off the jiggle pin seems to have made a slight improvement in warm up time.
