St215 gearbox, how easy to inspect gearset etc?

Postby cedwards » Sat May 29, 2010 10:40 am

Hey, have had a rattle from current gearbox for past 18 months, sounds like cv noise but have had three mechanics look at it now last being toyota in Albany who say noise is internal gearbox issue, noise seems relative to axle speed so assume more likely front diff/transfer side of things.

Have bought a second hand box off trademe and wondering if it's easy to do a quick inspection of the internals before installing without doing a full rebuild? Are there any bearings etc that are known to go on these and should be replaced regardless?
May save having to pull it all out again.
Any advice appreciated.
