1GEU Vacuum Advance

I've been having issues with the 1GEU in my GX71.

Problems:

Overheating problem under load that I've never been able to diagnose
Extremely poor KM/L
Very low on power (got dragged by a bus )

Today I think that with the help of a mates timing light I diagnosed all three. Timing was retarded as far as it would go and under load the vacuum advance would send it way advanced of what is reasonable.

I don't know how these systems work, and while I'm looking into them could anyone suggest ways of finding/fixing the fault?

P.s. I did know that timing was going to be the issue with power and mileage, please don't flame me for that.


EDIT: It doesn't even have a vacuum tube to the dissy. The advance is controlled electronically somehow. Lame, must be time for the 1GGTE..

apart from the overheating, that sounds like typical 1geu stuff..
no power and poor fuel economy.

Ill have a look see if it mentions the 1geu in my haynes manual next time im out in the shed.

It's getting a bit old though, $90 is taking me about 380 - 400kms, which would be ok if it was fast, but it's not
