Failed WOF for suspension too low?

So i just took the GT4 in for a wof today. They reckon the front suspension is to low, i.e under 100mm clearance.

I have never failed a wof on this in the time i have had it so far, so i am wondering how VTNZ test for the clearance?

kinda pissed of really, they checked my car in such detail that they also noticed the bonnet is missing a spring in the catch!

dont they just take it from the lowest point on the car and measure down? Just pump the tires up some more and take it back lol

im assuming this means they take it from the sump? prehaps i will just pump up the tyres and see what happens haha

Lowest structural/chassis point. Sump, exhaust etc don't count. The VTNZ I go to has a wooden block that is 100mm high that they put under the lowest point to see if it clears.

Anything that doesn't clear, except light stuff (ie bodykits) and the exhaust system will be a fail. Easiest way to check is throw a block of 4x2 under and see what it hits. And don't go to VTNZ Though if it was under 100mm and not certed I would have failed it too

check the 4x2, obviously, a laser frame 4x2 aint 100mm its 90mm.

Ill go round with a ruler. there is no way that my sill is under 100mm from the ground. i might take some photos etc as proof when i go back in, and insist on watching when they do it. the car has passed 4 warrents the way it is while i have had it, and it is not any lower now than it has been in the past

Unless you have a 100mm ruler you may find things difficult to measure under the car, Best idea as people have said is to cut a 100mm block of timber and drag it around under the car and check structual points/suspension and steering etc for clearance, If its close mayby some different size wheels or more air pressure may help as a temp fix?

If it clears then take it back and get them to recheck it, if they still fail it get another WOF place to check it and issue a WOF, then ask for your money back from VTNZ

Im thinking about putting my mates commodore wheels on it and taking it back. i will get a 100mm block of wood tomorrow and double check, just in case it is out but only by a small margin. if it is out then i have no problem with them failing it, it is just that i believe it is not too low at the moment.

Yeah, but in GT4 the lowest part in that area is the hump on the crossmember (which is lower than the sump).

And that can be checked? well i guess it would be able to seeing as its the cross-member

Hmm looks like i may have to eat my hat here. I just tested it. i have miles of clearance under all the sills etc, its just the darn crossmember, i need to gain about another .5mm at the front! it was more like 1-2mm but i cranked up the tyres to 45psi and i am so close haha!

Does anyone have some easy ideas to get that extra .5mm out of the suspension?

just stick some 5 mm spacers under the 3 bolts on your camber plate / strut towers under the bonnet

Yea, that idea literraly must have just occured to me while you were typing this. I think that might be the awnser im looking for, although any other ideas are still appreciated!

remove the engine and gearbox , that'll give you plenty of clearance

They would have to be complete wang's to pick you up on .5mm.

i can't imagine how low this must be, when i had my GTR Celica, that used to scrape over most bumps and that was on factory springs. Can't imagine what this must be like, bet it looks good though.
