Clutch in a '90 Camry?

Postby BlakJak » Sat Jun 05, 2010 11:10 am

I'm looking at buying a 1990 Toyota Camry, 4S-FE powered.
Took it for a drive this morning and the only problem that leapt out at me was a shimmering/slipping/shuddering in the clutch when taking off from low speed under accellerator gears 1-2.

Any ideas on what sorta drama this might cause? I guess it just needs a new clutch, anyone know what it'd cost to get done? (I'm not really equipped to do it myself so i'd need to get it done by someone...)

It seems pretty straight aside, no rust, has the usual clear coat probs, and needs a new stereo fitted... can live with all of that if it's not going to bite me in the next few months :)

May cause some hot spots on the flywheel if you leave it, but they'll machine out.
I would expect, depending on workshop labour rates, for the job to be ~500-600
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

And dont forget to have the rear main seal replaced, i would imagine TGP would be around $75 (3SGTEs are around that)

Mm , yeah, ouch, clutch problem may be a no goer then in terms of budget.
Gonna hit the car fair tomorrow and see what other options present themselves.

Having looked at a few more cars the Camry is looking good and the guy is bringing his price down to account for the fact i've gotta do a bit of work on it.

Anyone able to flag any other potential issues? I know i'll be up for a cambelt soon too.
