Starter motor ???

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:27 pm

Car is a 3s-ge Curren, suddenly wouldn't start. Put some jumpers on it and same response, just clicking. Checked all fuses and all is good. So I pulled the starter motor out and turned over. All that happens is the gear jumps up and down and it doesn't really turn over.

I have also tried hitting it with a hammer, haven't tried dropping it from a height yet

So just before I hit up the local PaP, is there anything else i should be looking at??

Thanks

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Put current directly to the motor, not to the solenoid, turns over now doesn't it?
Take the plate off the end of the solenoid and you'll see the 2 contacts, one from the battery lead & one to the starter's motor, and the spring loaded copper washer on the end of the solenoid's thingy that bridges the contacts. Clean up the contacts & washer, usually no need to replace'em, just file.
If current directly to the motor doesn't spin it, then it's gotta be pulled apart, brushes & commutator checked or replaced.

hahahahaha last "sparky" that fitted an alarm in a mates corolla, cos he could do it cheap, managed to nearly burn it to the ground.

98 percent of the time the diference between a conventional electrician and an AUTO-electrician is vast,
i dont f uck around with mains power because of this, would pay for you to do the same.
no offence intended

(ive been an qualified auto-electrician for 5 years)
PM me for anything autoelectrical, Info or jobs etc....

I'd never use choco-blocks, heatshrink and solder is where its at 8)

Anyway, I pulled the starter apart and soaked it in brakleen, gave it a good scrub before letting it dry out. Put back together and in the car and all is working as it should now. Thanks "allencr" for the good advice, saved me a few $$$. (Not that everyone else's advice wasn't good either)
