C5* vs E5* gearbox weight?

Postby gmacrae » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:22 am

I'm thinking about putting a LSD e5* gearbox from an ae92 gtz in my ae92 (20v). I like the taller gearing in the 4agze gearboxes. Does anyone know the actual difference in weight of the 2 types of gearbox?

Cheers

Yeah - my grunto meter (from muscling gearboxes into place) would say that C gearboxes are about 35kg and E boxes about 50 to 55kg.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I duno why you would put a E series into a 20v. Thats taking a step backwards. Unless its a turbo 20v.

yea i didnt realise the weight difference was that much. I just like that they rev lower at 100ks, and the lsd would be nice

What is the top/final gearing like in the 6speeds? Any taller?

For top gear 6speed is very close to top gear for 5speed.

Its not the weight that would be the backwards step, it will be the ratios of the E series box. They are no where near as close as a C series box.
ie 3rd gear on the E series box is really far from 2nd gear. 2nd takes you to around 90kph @7500rpm, 3rd takes you to 150kph @7500rpm.

You will also need a new clutch plate to suit the E series spline as thats 1-1/8" vs 15/16".

Yup at 100k iirc 6th gear gets you about 3,000rpm (maybe 3,200)

Found a gear/speed calculator i forgot i had, it says:

c160 6th @ 60mph is 2920
c56 5th @ 60mph is 3125

(with 195/50/15 tyres - gear ratios from wiki)

Guess my tacho must read high

Anyone got a ae111 c160 they wanna sell me? :)

About 3200 at 100kph. 6spd vs ~3400 at 100kph 5spd. Not huge difference.

E58 gearbox is 2900rpm at 100kph
The only real difference is third gear, I dont remember but its close to 155/160 when your stringing out the revs.
Never maxxed 4th or 5th.

The e58 (i think) that came with my ae92 gtz would sit about 3400rpm at 100, but it was a bit of an unknown what exactly that gearbox was.

If you want to rev less at 100km/hr , fit the 3.7 diff from a starlet in place of the 4.3 that corollas have .

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

I had an E5* in my AW when I first fitted the 20v and was doing the exact same lap times round the old Taupo track as with the 16v. Swapped back to the C52 and picked up 3 seconds a lap - the g/b was the only change I made. The E5* is basically the same box as the the 3SGTE runs and a 20v isn't quite up to that sort of output - close but no cigar. :D

And whenever someone starts poking out hundreds of hp in their SW, they never touch the g/b so it would be slightly overkill for a 20v....
See ya

You running 10inch wheels?
In 5th at 100kph it should be just under 3000rpm.

Am I wrong here?
What other gearboxs came with the ae92 gtz?

15's with very close to the same rolling diameter as stock.

It's possible someone rebuilt the gearbox at some stage and changed the diff or something.

yes with the E58 in 5th with 205/50/15s you should be at 102kph @3000rpm.
5th gear has a ratio of 0.82 and a final drive of 3.94
at 8000rpm in 5th you would eb doing 270kph :)

I changed my diff ratio from 3.94 to 4.29, so in 5th @100kph im at 3300rpm.

You have a C52 box now with a 4.3 diff in it , if you want to do somewhere around 2700(been a while since I drove the car) at 100km then get the diff out of a starlet C52 box which is 3.7 .
I am currently going the other way to make my race car accelerate faster as I don't commute in it.

you don't even need a starlet diff... go grab a cheapo c series box off at 4afe/7afe and you wont have to rip it apart...
But I dont see your point in doing this.....
