Both say out. But one on the left has the 'in' fitting?

Left says in, right says out. Same fitting.

After having a look a closer look, the fittings on the new one are correct, and the old one was stamped wrong / wrong filter, weird as shit.

Your new filter is stamped incorrectly.
The fitting for banjo is the out (where fuel comes out), while the hex nut fitting is the in (where fuel comes in from fuel line under the car).

just fit it as it fits (banjo on top, nut on bottom).

All that assuming that the banjo is the fuel rail end, and nut is the fuel line (from tank) end.

EDIT: looking at the pics, and new filter is faulty. It has wrong fittings welded to it, actually it has them wrong way around.

EDIT2: perhaps it is wrong filter? I assume it is not OEM?

Banjo bolt is tank side, nut is rail side.

Just fitted it how it had to go. Ignored what is stamped on it. If i have fueling issues, I know what the problem is. lol.
