Adjustable Suspension - are some brands superior?

Postby h8wrxs » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:05 pm

im looking at getting a new set of shocks/springs for my evo and am thinking about going for adjustys

anyways this got some mates of mine into a bit of an argument over what brands are good and what are shit

does anyone on here actually know what to look for and what brands are best?

im nto after full track suspension btw, just a street setup

BC golds are a decent street adjustable, yet still good quality. reasonable price too.

stay away from DC's or any of that chinese stuff. sure they might be made in the same factory as XXXX brand but its not really worth it when you hear all the horror stories when you aren't actually saving that much.

just be careful what spring rates you get if you just want to street it. may not be a problem in a heavier car like an evo but levins/truenos don't like 8kg springs for street! :P

This

Why are you spending all that on racing suspension?

Get some harder springs and nice shocks. Will drive nice and be better in the hills.

yes you're right, this is exactly what started the argument with my mate

problem is i currently have a custom setups with koni shock/spring that was setup by the previous owner for gravel racing and it sits at about 190mm off the ground

i want to lower it to about 110mm or so but dont want to screw up the handling with a set of king springs

so how do i work out the correct spring/ shock setup to use and how do i workout what spring rate etc to use??

i dont know anything about suspension...

Anything short of a shock dyno, it's all up to personal experience.

There's a lot more to it than "Just get some shocks and kings springs au!", the bound, rebound, the different tyres you run from front to back. LSD setup etc.....

I tend to stick to the tried and true Japanese brands for height-adjustable suspension. HKS and APEX'i always make stuff too hard for the streets, especially New Zealand roads.

You'll find everybody has their own personal preference when it comes to suspension setups.

Don't forget you'll have to get a cert for height adjustable suspension.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Great thing about adjustable suspension is you can drive around with them at a driveable height then when you want to take some wank wank pics or something, it takes about 15 minutes to completely slam it out.

Or if you're like me, sit it on the ground, cert it, and just drive it around anyway. Keep many cable ties in your boot/glovebox to keep reattaching yout bumper/lips/sideskirts and whatever else.

it all depends on how your shocks are set up presently. do they have a 'low' spring in them? best solution to not $&#$% the handling up with king springs is to not use king springs. my koni setup has TEIN springs and i highly recommend them. can't remember the spring rates but are not too stiff for road, yet still ok at the track. mine gave a drop of 55mm from stock, but thats on a ae101 which doesn't drop very far at all.

for something as common as an evo, i am quite sure autolign will have a TEIN set that will drop it pretty close to 110mm.
just get the 'stylish dress up kit' - i know gay name but these are TEIN's street kits.

the only thing you will have to watch out for is that your koni's have enough travel left in them once dropped 80mm. if they are for gravel they prob have enough travel for India. but still after buying springs and (possibly) having to shorten shocks, it will still be a whole lot cheaper than adjusties + cert

Just put stock replacement parts in. My EVO6 has good factory suspension, plenty stiff enough and goes round corners well.

Why f$#@ with a good factory setup and make it worse?

mmmm the main reason i dotn want adjustys is because of cert. plain and simple

my problem is my car is high enough to drive a bus under it, i want to lower it purely for the look of it but dont want to $&#$% up the handling because is does handle amazingly compared to anything else ive driven.

ill give those TEIN's a go though thanks

The good thing with TEIN is that they actually test their products.
So if they do a spring set that lowers X amount, that is because to go much lower requires further mods so retain safety and bumpsteer etc.

AE101's are actually quite low underneath so even a minor drop makes them annoying with driveways etc.

I would see about a set of TEIN's and some Koni shocks in a perfect world.

Not all cars have a good set up from stock!

+1

Ive gone with Koni shocks(dampning adjustable) and tein springs in my ae111 and they perform great on the street and track.

They were also $600 less than a set of BC golds from redline

KYB struts and Tein springs in my AE101. Superb combination and KYBs arent too pricey. Lowest part under the vehicle is the front swaybar mounts at 105mm from ground, thats low for an AE101
If it doesn't fit, force it.
If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

BTW Toyota genuine struts are very likely to be KYB or Tokico.

Yes but very different from the KYB's you buy off the shelf over here
