Went to put the wheel back on and whilst tightning the last nut, the stud snapped off.

Whats involved in replacing it?

From what i've read the old one comes out and can replace it with a new stud, is that right? If so how does it come out?

Also, where would one go about getting 1 wheel stud?

get them from partmaster or toyota.

you just take the wheel and the brake disc off

bash the old one out put the new one thru then put a large thick washer over it and use the nut to rattle it thru with your gun.

take the washer off and put it all back together

with the right tools its a 5 min job.

Smack it out with a hammer.
Buy a new one from any place that sell car parts. Repco, supercheap etc etc

Thanks for the quick replies, didn't think supercheap or repco would sell them, am i right in saying that it has to be specifically for toyota and specifically for a AE111 Toyota (has superstrut if that matters)?

Looks like i will have to go there during morning smoko, what sort of price do you think i will be paying for a stud? Would go there now but its shut

Wheel studs are cheap as its an easy job. Part Master BNT or TGP would be your best bet.

From memory SCA/Ripco only have trailer ones avalible off the the shelf.... I could be wrong thoe

Supercheap don't stock them, can get them from Autostop if you have those down there

Some front wheel studs can't be replaced with the bearing intact... might want to check that there is room to get the new stud in without taking the bearing apart.

At Repco the partnumber should be ZNS340 I think...

Don't do that. You are going to kill some one.

If I were you I would replace whole lot. They are about $5 each. If one snapped there should be a reason why. Over-tightening is most common cause. At least you need to inspect all other ones for cracks and stretching in same place where the first one snapped.

And don't drive it with 3 wheel nuts.

seconded. they are as cheap as chips to buy. TWL or any good engineering shop should be cheaper than repco or bnt, as you should be able to buy them without the frilly packaging.

you might be best off to take one of the others out and take it to repco with you, i had this problem a few months ago and they had all the studs in a box mixed up, not labelled or anything.... and they arent always a 5 min job, i had ALOT of trouble getting the old studs out...

geez, your local Repco must be average, all the ones i have been into, have them on a revolving rack in blister packs, hence the reason why one should go to a engineer type supplier, so one dosn't pay for packaging.

sounds like you need to invest in a bigger hammer.

Repco didnt have the studs so ended up going to Toyota. Have the day off work tomorrow to fix the car.

Is it really necessary to take off the hub? I've seen a lot of tutorials on removing studs with the hub left on with big american cars with loads of clearance but haven't had time to check how much clearance i have.

No, PS pump isnt run off a cogged belt. Either your pump is knackered, or your tyres are underinflated.

you shouldn't have to take off the hub, there is usually clearance and a gap in the brake dust shield for changing studs.

i ended up doing exactly that.... i seriously thought i was going to do more damage than good in doing so thought haha
