How much would my ae101 be worth?

Postby sik_gt_starly » Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:21 pm

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I have 2 cars, a worked 5efte gt starlet and my daily 91 ae101 trueno

When my starlet has a warrant (within 2 months) i want to sell/swap my trueno for a different daily such as an auto a31 cefiro (manual a bonus), i dont care about speed/auto/looks just want something cheap with a bit more room than the trueno, not after performance, in fact the less the better really, preferably 1990 or newer. must have a wof & rego, not interested in something with a poked motor or clutch etc, just something to get in and drive to work and not have to worry about police etc or car breaking down.

I have no idea what to ask for the trueno, hopfully you guys can help.

the trueno is a 1991 and manual, done 238000kms (give or take a few)
body is rough, 1 dent behind drivers door and roof is faded and rf guard is matt black.

motor is st 20v, leaks a bit of oil from what looks like rocker cover seal, also uses a bit of oil and smokes at high rpm, i dont think rings are in the best condition any more.

Gearbox/clutch are in good order, tiny bit of crunching but not very often, never thrash it as no point really.

Suspension, rear shocks are in ok condition, fronts are bit poked, has unknown brand superlows. passes a wof no worries and handles really nice.

performance wise everything is standard bar a pod filter that came on car when i bought it. has the standard twin exhaust

Interior, reasonably tidy when vacumed, missing control knob for heater and surround for headunit, comes with a cheapy cd player, alpine 6x9s in back and std front speakers, think only one works though. has some repco steering wheel, not the prettiest but reasonably comfy. Front of dash by window a bit warped from the sun or something.

wheels are standard 14 inch steelies with hubcaps with ok tread.

Engine check light pops up every now and then, put into diagnostics mode and it says knock sensor, havnt bothered fixing it, just clutch in, turn car off and crash start it, usually do this once or twice and it goes away. mainly happens around town.

Overall looks wise it is pretty poor, however has been reliable for me for last 20000km or so with many trips to/from auckland, palmy, hamilton etc getting around 13km/litre. the last few wofs its only failed on small things, costing no more than $200 in repairs etc to get a warrant.

Have had no problems at all in the whole time ive owned it, only one flat tyre. Has been the best car ive owned as is so reliable and cheap to run.

Has a warrant and rego, no money owing or anything like that

Any idea on what it would be worth would be great.

Thanks heaps

bang for buck i don't think you are going to get any better value than the ae101. pity they aren't bigger cars as you say.

considering the km's and engine condition i'd be asking somewhere between 2-3k. have a look on trademe and see what ae111's are going for in similar condition ~ 4k so older car is def guna be worth less than that.

yea not expecting too much at all. when i bought it i got the deal of century on it and would be happy to get a bit more than it cost and what ive spent maintaining on it.

Would be nice to make back what ive spent on a car instead of the usual loosing thousands

I had a figure of 1500 in my mind but wasnt sure how accurate that would have been

For a roughy, $1500 is fair. I paid $400 for mine with no wof or reg, didnt really need much to get a wof either.

Going from the amount people seem to put on older cars these days you should be asking about $7000, but realistically will get $1500

yep trademe has alot to answer for on the inflation front, seen how much a 92 corolla sedan with 200+ km on the clock are being advertised for? i've seen some for 3500 or more. people look up their cars and think that others are actually selling theirs at this price...

Going to a Cefiro for more room is probably a backwards step....
For the size of the car they are pretty cramped inside.
Then again if you don;t have to sit in the back why should you care?

a sr18 or 20de primera or bluebird would also be pretty sweet

a lot of cars on trademe seem to be perpetually for sale though. A ton of absolute dreamers there.

I'd say that car is worth around 1200,... 1500 asking price. Someone I know bought a BZ-G levin from the carfair 2 weeks ago for 2200

So glad its not just me thinking WTF!!!

A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a more economical daily as I do 100+kms a day and thought about going back to a Trueno or even an older corolla, saw the prices for 200+km toyotas and hondas, laughed and went out and bought a late model low kms euro.

Yeah, the prices on "cheap" cars in the last 6 months have become very silly. eg: I could buy a 1990 Lancer POS for $2k, or I could buy a 1995 Bluebird POS for the same price ... wtf? Yeah, I'll take the car five years newer thanks!

Go back a couple of years anything with a new WOF was worth about a grand. Now with economic belt tightening, people are hanging on to all their old cars instead of trading in on something newer, and anything with a new WOF seems to be going for $2k no matter how horrid it is.

I put a 1991 (?) Familia hatch on trademe for $1600 or so with a new WOF on it thinking "yeah, I'll be haggled down a bit on this one". Then I had six people booked to look at it within a couple of hours, and it sold to the second people to look at it. I was surprised.

So you might get $1500 for your 101 even if it is a bit bung. A year ago, I'd have said you'd get $800 for it.
