lightweight exhausts

Postby fxgt race » Thu Jun 17, 2010 10:54 pm

The car is on its winter diet, For mild steel how thin walled can one go for an exhaust, What other light weight materials can be used and is there lighter mufflers out there that you know off that can be used.

does the exhaust have to exit out the back? or can you dump it earlier??
When in doubt, down and out.

People have been using aluminium in the states. Not sure how long one would last..

Thin wall stainless is usually pretty light and lasts along time.

My exhaust is side exit just before the back wheel, Stainless is probably the best to use i guess. Anybody in auckland do stainless exhaust systems on TS

Im already in the bantam weight for boxing, weighting in at a measly 60kgs. I need me pies. Its weight at the moment and more power next year. As we say in losing weight , many crumbs make the big time cookie.

Have you drilled holes throughout the car?
If you look back at the old shell sport cars they attacked everything with a hole saw!

Ha - I have read about drag racers in the states acid dipping the body (I presume the cars had full chassis) to make all the metal thinner.

Ken
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

acid dip

Postby fxgt race » Sat Jun 19, 2010 3:20 pm

Yep this car is down to single skin everywhere. Spot weld drill bit has been to town , every bracket ,piece of metal has been cut off. Ive i weighed the car now it would come in at 750kgs. Its nearly to a point where to concentrate on handling and more power, Have and adjustable in cabin blade swaybar going in this winter. If i was to acid dip this puppy i Think I would have a chassis and roll cage left

I was told by a exhaust shop bender that the minimum the he can bend in a bender is 1.6mm.

sounds about right. but 1.6 is still quite thick,
most light weight (racing) Japanese exhaust systems are welded bends rather then machine bends,
the rs hamada exhaust system on my ae85 is super thin wall stainless and its welded, same with a friends titanium exhaust all welds,
they also dont have flange's but slip over type joins, saves quite alot of weight,

i had a honda exhaust header that had ribs machined into the head flange to save weight, also looked super tech,

well if you had a honda buddy club make 0.8mm wall thickness exhaust systems. standard thickness that most mild steel in nz is 1.6mm, but for the stainless you can get it down to 1.2mm for 2.5" and 3" which is what i used on my corolla.

An after thought, too thin an exhaust will sound tinny.

Yeah it prob would.
But its a race car so he prob isn't bothered.

There is the buddyclub spec 2.
0.8mm thick

A racing spec muffler is a light weight and highly efficient muffler that is made to perform for circuit run. In its street version, to optimize torque in the low to mid speed range, it is equipped with an efficient middle silencer (resonator). Racing Spec Muffler were designed for high performance as well as meeting sound level standards. With its deep throaty tone, it echo's it racing linage.
Spec II is a specially designed system for competition use only. Its simple straight thru design creates an increase of exhaust gas velocity in order to improve efficiency. The middle silencer (resonator) on the main pipe is designed to maintain torque in the low to mid speed range.

Not sure if there will be one for your application. Unless you modify it or something?
