3SGTE JE Forged Piston Rings - Help

Postby Heylin » Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:06 pm

Only ring set I can find for 3SGTE 86.5mm bore on JE Site is JG1004-3405 so assuming this is the right one ?

But the place im buying from wants me to measure ring thickness as they say there are possibly (they couldnt be sure) 2 sets of rings available. I think they may be getting confused by looking at individual rings for 86.5mm bore and not the engine application.

Indeed if you look at 86.5mm bore individual rings it comes up with 2 entries for each ring type, the first set matching those in the 3sgte ring set above

Top 1.0mm Carbon Steel \ Nitrate, Bar BCut
Second 1.2mm Ductile Iron \ Phosphate, Napr BCut
Oil 2.8mm Carbon Steel \ Nitrate, flexivent

Top 1.5mm Ductile Iron \ Chrome, Bar DWall
Second 1.5mm Iron \ Phosphate, tapered wall, file to fit 0.005in
Oil 4.0mm Carbon Steel \ Chrome, flexivent

So whats the deal with the second set made from different material and coating and slightly thicker ?

Picked up some rings from a TS member (big thanks).

Chrome Carbon Steel ones

Seems my ring size was slightly different to the current 3sgte JE pistons which are 1.0 x 1.2 X 2.8

mine are 1.2 x 1.5 x 4.0, possibly they changed their piston design for 3SGTE or ive got the universal 86.5mm sport compact pistons.

The thinner ringed version is a race version, intented to be changed regulary
The thicker ringed pistons are the street version.
There's very little power advantage and won't last anywhere near as long as the thicker versions
