I think my alternator/regulator is blown?

Postby cat007 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 12:14 pm

Hey all

My alternator on my 4Y powered Hiace appears to have shat itself.

I think it stemmed from driving through a big puddle but I can't be sure.

Symptoms are:

Not charging (battery warning light on)
Overcharging (battery warning light on and alternator pumping out about +16 volts)

I assume it's the regulator, not the alternator but I assume they're an all in one package?

So should I look for an alternator or a regulator?

Cheers

Afaik it's an external regulator

I found this picture

Will measure 17~ volts without regulator

Image

If it's looking anything like that then it needs to be replaced and should fix your problem

By looking at pic, it should be on the alternator, on a side, close to back side, since there are brushes sticking out of the thing.

Sorry - didn't realize they were brushes :P

Cool thanks for that. Now I'll just have to find one. Reckon that's something a parts store like repco etc would stock?

Yeah - was hoping you wouldn't say that. Kinda wanted to use the van this weekend haha. I guess I'll just take the charging lead off the alternator so it doesn't kill the batteries and charge em up after each trip haha

Part master can order them in, so I'll get the details and it should arrive by Tues-Wed....dam lol

Could have tried an Appco branch, they stock auto electrical bits.

generally if appco have it, repco can just get it off them, or send you down to them.

I would place a bet that your regulator will not look anything like that,
unless your van is Australian assembled.

that is a Boch type reg and are classed as an internal regulator,
as it is part of the alternator.

You will be looking for a much larger metal box,
like 5 cigarette packets on top of each other size,
probably behind the glove box.

Or it may be an actual internal regulated alt, and it needs to be disassembled to get to the regulator,

But since you got it wet and it stopped,

my bet would be a fault in the alt. not the reg,
but all guesswork at this stage.

Generally the Repco staff dont know part numbers for electrical bits to look them up ;)

Hey all

Still haven't fixed this yet.

Looking at the alternator I can't tell much lol - but from this link:

http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_G_1987_T ... _1903.html

It appears kinda small but I cant see it anywhere in the engine bay. I'll have a look behind the middle seat kick panel (under the stereo) as there's fuses and stuff in there - unless I should look behind the glove box?

If it is anything like L series diesel, then it is under AC pump on the drivers side under the drivers seat. Alternator I mean.
I am not sure where is regulator, as I have never dealt with old stuff.

Oh, no I know where the alternator is

I just cant find the regulator. Unless toyodiy's picture is wrong and it's internal to the alt?

I am fairly certain that this type of alternator is with internal regulator, while if you click >> you will see old type with external regulator.

Oops - didn't mean to do the eye roll lol

I'll take the alternator off in the morning and see if I can get a better look at it.

Cheers

In the old 4y toyota vans they are usually external reg and the reg is usually in behind the glove box, or at the base of the steering column which is a bitch to get to.
