Toyota to produce a new Supra and MR2!!

Toyota is set to lead a raft of Japanese hybrid sports cars with a successor to the MR2 and a reborn Supra. Both are due within the next four years.

Scheduled for late 2013, the MR2 replacement will have a hybrid powertrain based on a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

The model was originally going to use a V6 hybrid powertrain, but the success of Honda’s CR-Z in Japan is said to have prompted a rethink.

The Supra successor — previewed by the FT-HS (Future Toyota Hybrid Sport) at the 2007 Detroit show — was said to have been canned. But strengthening hybrid sales have earned the model a second chance, so a new Supra — powered, like the FT-HS, by a V6 hybrid powertrain — is back on track.

The model’s development is now running almost in parallel with that of the FT-86. That car, a joint project with Subaru, has been delayed until at least 2013.

Set for late 2013/early 2014

Here's hoping the V6 in the Supra is Twin turbo and competes with the GTR in both price range and performance!

*Hopes it's not a repost  *

I agree. And in terms of price. GTR needs some fresh competition.

Although I wouldn't say no to a GTR.

new version of 2000GT!
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

^ Hell, I'm keen for any sort of near-future affordable sports cars from toyota!

Seems like they're reverting back to thier old roots though (in a good way) with the FT-86, and now these two.

That MR2 was built a while back as a concept design by a tuning company, not Toyota :?

i have a dream project in which I'd make a 2000GT tribute car
.
.
.
Use Altezza suspension on a spaceframe
Maybe use late model alloy V6 motor
Fibreglass/carbon fibre/papier mache body

It would soak up way more $ than a new flash toyota but there would be nothing like it on the road!

They have been saying this for a couple of years now I'm not really feeling the look of that new Supra I wish they would just bury the Supra and call it something else.I'm not really that excited at how it looks either.

Should be.

Mr. Revhead, I read that the MR2 was named that because it was a 'mid-ship runabout 2 seater', not because it was an MR layout? (Did I miss the sarcasm? )

If you read furthur down into the article I posted (I only quoted the main part of it) it says that it will be 1.5L to compete with one of the new honda's coming out.

2jayzgte, that 'supra' is the old FT-HS concept (you probably know this already?), the supra will be based off of it's chassis, but I doubt it's going to look all that close to that when it actually goes into production.
Cheers,
Brandon

Yes, Mid-ship runabout 2 seater is the official work.
I put about 0.23 sec thought into my comment :P Close enough!

1.5L even with a electric motor boost is still weak. dont bother competing with honda and their crz, build a car that i would buy.

the new s16 silvia is 1.6L and that will make 20% more power and torque then the s15 2.0L did, so i'll bet money to say new tech will win,
