Whangarei to invercargill
Hey guys i'm planning on going to invers to study i will most probs leave on the 12th head to wellington in one day and then the ret of the south island over a couple of days if anyone is keen on a convoy or cruise..
good luck doing it in just a couple days. I flew into Queenstown then went down to Invercargill and Bluff, then came up the east coast through Balclutha, Dunedin, Timaru, Chch, Kaikoura and ended up in Nelson, then got on the ferry at Picton and made it back up to Hamilton. I did the trip in 6 days and even then I was on the road for about 6 hours every day and the trip just felt very rushed.

if you're doing it over 3 days you will not have time or inclination to do any socialising along the way
I thought I could do Auckland - Queenstown in a day and a half once, ended up stopping at a motel at Geraldine at the end of the 2nd day as I was pretty f%#ed
Before that didn't stop anywhere at all apart from a sleep at a motel in welly and 2 x 5 minute fuel/pie/coke/piss stops
if you wanna explore/meet people along the way i think you need about a week

in the OP's case, i would get one the graveyard sailing and have the whole day to get down the coast.

SH1 the whole way is do-able, (albeit a boring drive)
However if you were planning to go thru otago (lindis pass, pigroot etc) this time of year IMO you wanna be fairly awake/alert especially if you're going thru there after sundown. A momentary lapse in concentration, patch of frost and things can get unexpectedly hairy
Its an epic drive but just not worth the risk if youre dead on your feet
Geraldine is a lot nicer then Invercargill!

I'd say its an easy 2 day trip. Done Dunedin to Nelson a couple of times in 1 day, and partied hard at night when I've gotten there too. Just have to leave early, say no later than 7.
We're doing Dunedin to Tauranga in 2 days at the end of the year when we're moving up there. to Whangarei can't be that much longer, as long as you don't strike bad Auckland traffic

Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

the graveyard ferry is such a bad idea lol.I tried it in febuary people rush to find the best bit of floor because the seats are too crap to sleep in. spend the extra $25 bucks and get the morning ferry and sleep in a bed instead of a floor.
.....now I wait for fangsport to tell me to harden up
