Head Removal

Postby NOLAW » Tue Jun 29, 2010 7:09 pm

Im planning to remove my smallport head off my ze block this week, and am looking forward to getting right into the works of my motor for a nosey, just want to make sure i know what im doing before i start

Is there certain things to remember when pulling it off other than the obvious keeping all the bolts etc, like should anything be labelled as i take it off?
I will be planning to use the head again when i get my 7a block rebuilt

If you get the 4age manual's that are available online, they are very helpful and even if they are only for a bluetop they still give you a step by step of removal and also the processes for checking surfaces for flatness, clearances and torque specifications.

I'm currently 75% of the way through rebuilding a 3sgte and it takes quite a while if you do everything as the book says. Don't rush things and be meticulous. It's not really difficult so much as patience testing.

Make sure you undo the head bolts in the correct sequence!
Otherwise, when building motors I've found it handy to have coin bags to keep various bolts and bits and pieces in, then you can label them and not lose bits.

yeah you have to undo the bolts in a particular order. I think you normally go through and loosen every bolt 1/2 turn, then go back through the same sequence and take them off the rest of the way.

not sure on the exact sequence though, but it helps prevent the head warping so would pay to get it right

this website covers a fair bit of the 4age > 7age conversion too, might be worth a read... http://www.aeu86.org/index/engine-4age- ... post=60902

No need to keep the cam caps in order they are marked in the top with a number and a letter. Example E1 for exhaust cap 1 etc.
For removing the head loosen the headbolts starting on the ends then work your way inwards, the middle 2 bolts should be the last 2.
Reverse sequence for torquing them down.
4AGE's are pretty easy to strip and learn on.
