Play in R/F Wheel

Postby AE86less » Tue Jun 22, 2010 1:02 pm

Hi Toyspeed :D A bit of a noob question:

I just failed my WOF on the above (GX71), it doesn't seem to be the balljoint and the WOF guy said something like Steering rack end or something. What exactly is it? How difficult/expensive is it to fix myself?

Cheers,

Sam

Not very expensive $30-$100 on parts. Get the boot as well.
Can be a tricky but not overly complicated. It is located on the end of the rack under the boot.

Well maybe gayspeed is blowing it out of proportion but you can't even swear good swears on here. Nanaspeed? PG-13speed? Churchspeed?

Anyway, if the play is in the rack end you might as well replace the tie rod end while you are in there. Keep note of the overall length of the tie rod and rack end. The adjustment determines your wheel alignment.

Hardest part of the job can be getting the tierod end out've the hub.
Big hammer or the correct puller is what you're after.

Not that many words banned on here anymore to be fair. Different strokes for different folks. Either way people should just avoid shit they don't like, rather than bagging it and spend more time working on cars 8)

Cheers TGB & Sergei.

Yeah, busted. I get cranky at TS sometimes, I've met some seriously good dudes off here (the bulk of people seem to be) but theres always a few bad eggs who ruin it. I won't name names, but you do a dude a favour and you don't expect to be gypped in return.

If you go to any parts supplier and say "I need a right hand steering rack end for a XXXX" They will know exactly what you are talking about.

"play in wheel" could be anything. WOF inspectors aren't there to diagnose the fault, just to inspect.

Actually the WOF inspector does have a limited digonistic job on his hand, as
^ that is an incorrect thing to fail it on.

However, if it was =paly in
-Wheel bearing
-balljoint
-tie-rod end or rack end
-steering rack

Play in wheel?? Take the weel off and see if there is any movement in the wheel - i can allmost promise that there will not be any "paly in wheel"

It is a wof inspectors job to correctly diagnose the fault (within reason) to confirm or deny if it is a failable offence.
