caldina gt4 using to much gas?

Postby stevedabomb » Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:12 pm

Been driving the wifes st246 gt4 caldina for the last few weeks and it only seems to be able to do 350kms to 50litres

Thats just around town driving and not using the turbo to much.

From what ive read it should be doing 500+kms

Just wondering if anyone has any tips as to why it may be using more gas than it should - havent changed spark plugs so will give that a go first i guess

Town driving will always be the worst. Take it for a good long drive and check it again. Then I'd imagine you'll get over 500km.

Yeah, some cars have absolutly shite fuel economy in town driving but much better on the open rd. My wifes 323 does around 13l/100km riund town but 9ish on the open road. Its been checked on a gas analyzer etc and runs very rich when cold but once warmed up its all good.

Was thinking to change air filter and plugs hoping it will improve a bit - whats a gas analayzer test cost does it just tell you if your cars running to rich etc

Give the car a good service, plugs filters oil change etc.

Make sure the tyres are pumped up good, I do mine at 38ish psi.

Also make sure the car is heating up quickly. A cold car will always run REALLY rich. Don't heat a car up by idling it on the driveway, just drive it, it's better for it and it'll heat up quicker.

500+ round town in a slushomatic Caldina turbo?
Good luck with that!

All sounds about normal to me

I constantly do that on my GT4 ST205 (~500-550 around the city out of 65L).

Should not be much different for Caldina.

And are they significantly heavier than the ST205?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

What gas do you put in it?

It'd really need 98 octane.
I run my Aristo on Gull Force 10 stuff.

No such thing as 96 these days dude. It's 91 or 95, then the good stuff.
You're car will need 98 for sure.

fuel

Postby stevedabomb » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:09 am

woops 95 lol not sure why they went down from 96 to 95 - i just assumed for daily driving arround town with not much use of turbo that 95 would be ok and obviously cheaper $90 a tank

It's often false economy using lower octane gas. Your car will more than likely run better on 98 and even get more km per tank on it too.

Do the spark plugs and air filter and give it a good run with some 98 in it, she'll be good to go then.

It's heats up faster (and more evenly I suppose???) and loads the motor as opposed to just idling it, which is bad for an engine.

Yeah - Idling an engine is bad at the best of times - let alone when it's cold and all the tolerances are massive and your pistons are rattling around in the bore

Oxygen sensors have limited life and when they fail , runs rich and uses too much fuel.
If that's the case, the plugs will look too dark.
Changing plugs does nothing, changing the faulty part should fix it and if it's not broken then it doesn't need fixing.

If in doubt, hook up a voltmeter to the sensor and leave the car idling, report back what readings you've got.

Jap turbo cars are supposed to run on 100 RON. So even 98 isn't ideal.
