you'll need a aftermarket ecu and a dyno to make any improvements on the stock setup.

modifying the factory tubes on a factory ecu will be very detrimental to your torque curve.

get a spare set to play with and have some fun though, tis a great way to learn about steez 8)

Leave them alone.

Pro - gives you something to do for half an hour
Con - waste of said half an hour

Don't really understand what you're wanting to do though, cut them off? lol will run like a bag of shit full of holes probably.

Maybe explain exactly what you mean?

After world war II, the Japanese economy was in tatters.

To stimulate their economy, it was drafted into Japanese law that each type of Japanese industry must negotiate amongst themselves to use x amount of materials from other Japanese industries, in order to consume more materials and stimulate the economy.

Toyota negotiated a deal with a plastic manufacturer, and also a valve manufacturer, suspension manufacturer, and many others.

After many years passed and the Japanese recession ended, these historical laws and negotiations stayed in place.

During the early 90s, Toyota did not produce enough cars to use their required allocation of materials.

The purpose of the 20V 4AGE powered cars was to have as higher a material density as possible to meet their quotas. This is why they pointlessly have 5 valves per cylinder, (Take some out if you can) plastic trumpets in the intake which are completely useless and just take up space, (take them out!) this is also why they have other things which have too many parts like superstrut. (you should also take this out!)

So in summary, yes your assumption is correct!
They are completely useless, Toyota often puts a lot of things in cars which are completely useless, this is why. Take as much of it out as you can, there is no purposeful reason for any of it being there at all.

On the silvertop the engine will not run without the plenum on and air going through the Air Mass Senser.

Modifiying the ram tubes can be done and reinstalled in the plenum and only you would be the wiser. However, playing with ram tubes do very little in the way of improving or destroying performance. I had none on my car at one stage and it made no difference to when they were on.

Point of interest, at the moment Im running mine half the factory lenght.

may not seem like it, but check the fuel ratio. i see - +5% required fuel in various places over the whole rev range, just changing trumpet length alone. its not a 20v. and you may not see variances as big, but same deal applies

this explains your fuel ratio
