assuming he hasnt done anything silly like replace it with a t series diff it should be an f series.
Unfortunately the best way to tell the ratio is by taking the backing plate off and doing a tooth count.

LSD will have lsd oil sticker on the right hand side fin, this doesnt come off very easily, but can be covered in years of crud.

The subframe looks a lot one I modified.
The extra holes are so an F series diff will fit into a T series subframe (or vice versa).

Can't quite tell if it is a T or an F series diff. A better pic of the rear cover would be good.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

That's a t series. Only 3 bolts on top and the backing plate is the same as a t series I have laying around here. Also being a 1g-eu usually means a t series rear end. What does the engine bay build plate say?

It's likely the car has been converted to manual at some stage. Might have an interesting history to it? A lot can happen in the 25 years + since the car left the Toyota factory. Since your subframe is out of the car it's pretty easy to replace with a f series subframe and diff. Here's a couple of F series pics for reference anyway:

And yeah, 1jz + t series = not for long

What gearbox do you have?

because I have a W50 that has had some kinda bellhousing mod done so it fits onto the 1G engine, as I don't think there are any bellhousings for the W50 for 1Gs. Mine was converted from auto and has a T series diff

i had a mark II with a 1ggze, w series box (55 maybe?) and a locked t series rear. had been that way for at least three owners, all of them hooligans. seemed to be holding up fine.

there are defintely bellhousings for W > 1G

i say use it till it breaks!

but dont put an LSD centre in it, cos i reckon it WILL break :D

Looks like a 55 to me 57s are a wee bit thicker in relation to the sandwich plate.

Definitely 1G -> W bells around. Normally cheap too.

Naaa - they look exactly the same... you can't tell until you count the input shaft turns vs output shaft in 1st and 5th gear
