Thinking of swapping gearbox

Postby siren676 » Fri Jul 16, 2010 2:02 pm

I have a 1998 toyota starlet n/a and its got a c140 gearbox (4 speed).
It is really useless at motorway speeds with engine doing 3100rpm @ 100kph which seems really uneconomical.
Can anyone recommend what gearbox i should be looking at swapping into it?

Also should i be looking at putting a new clutch in now or when i eventually put in a 5e engine?

Anything with 5 speed that fits, say cynos/starlet gearbox (not diesel ones, those have horrible gear ratios).

3100rpm is about right for a smaller engined car at 100km/h, my 4age trueno does about that, my 5efte starlet revs a tad lower

Yeah but i would prefer it to be a bit lower. the motor sounds like it wants to explode

My swift does even worse than that. 100k in 5th is about 3300-3400 :(, altho in a lightweight car with small motor, the close ratios do make it more fun :D

My BZ Rolla sat roughtly there in fifth. From memory so did the 6-speeds.

Wouldn't be surprised if you found a 5 speed has the same final rato, just more gears in between.

I think this will most likely be the case.

I wouldnt think so, most 4th gear ratios are 1:1, with an over driven 5th. Or it would at the very least have a different final drive ratio

Only in a RWD box,

Most FWDS are not 1:1 4th.

A C52 from a starlet will be doing 2700 rpm at 100km/hr due to the 3.7 diff. If you get one from a corolla (which wont fit your motor) it will have a 4.3 diff and be doing 3300 ish at 100km/hr. You could also look at the 5 speed off any non turbo starlet C150 I think , which should also be better than what you have .

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

I dont think 72hp will even spin 20's. Anyway im getting some SSA Rush mags soon (15's).

Ill start looking for a c52 from a starlet. Anyone know how much they are or where ill get one from?

just grab a box out of a cynos, (pick a part after some one takes the engine, easy) as someone else said. for what you want, starlet c52's are overpriced, syncros are usually stuffed and it'l probably make your car slower if anything.
reving much lower at 100k, you'l probably find you will use more gas. as you'l be further down the pedal to keep the same speed
