Making an new plenum for an NA beams 3sge

Postby spannersnz » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:00 pm

I have a KP60 starlet, I have put a beams altezza motor in. The inlet mani doesnt fit, so I want to make a new one to replace it. What I wanted to know is... How special does the shape have to be? I am using standard ECU and throttle body, just need to change the shape of the air chamber.

Will keep runners the same length for obvious reasons.

What are the rules for making a new one? I was thinking it just needs to have same volume as standard equipment, without any ridiculous restrictions anywhere.

A big concern is whether or not the ECU will care.

Any thoughts or offers to build me one are appreciated.

ECU shouldnt care as altezza motors run a MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor. As long as you have a good sealed manifold with equal length runners & a decient sized throttle body(or use o/e) would probably be best imo.

i recall some posts around this subject a while back, and it seems the standard manifold and plenum is actually pretty awesome.

i know thats not an option for you, if you look up romanvs carina project thread it may provide some insight

edit - here it is

when are we going to see it finished roman? :P

Yeah TB will be standard item. Would be quite a mission to change it anyway as it isnt a direct linkage to the butterfly. The accel cable goes to a sensor, which then sends a message to the ECU to open the TB. Stupid shit if you ask me. Plus I hear all sorts of bad things about the MAF sensor having an whinge if tht TB diameter isnt the same as standard. Well more the inlet really but basically I dont want to get crazy on the changes.

Cheers for info, I might have to have a go at working out how much room I have

Could you use my existing flange and intake runners? I have to get the motor back in and see how much space I have to make up a template of sorts.

Im trying to save money here so if the cost is going to be silly then I will just make one up myself

Where abouts is the inlet plenum hitting?

I know the bellmouths on the inside of the plenum are pretty close to the outter edge of the plenum, so won't get much room there without changing inlet length, or creating a restriction on at the bellmouth.

I know the altezza's are very bad with pod filters affecting the MAF, not sure what changing the shape of the plenum would do...

Also if you need any wiring info or have any questions to do with the standard ecu I would be more than happy to help out.
