fpr problem

Postby gleem » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:30 pm

Ive got a chinese fuel pressure reg. Ive cut the fuel line that goes to the standard fpr and put the unit in between. Ive taken the standard fpr of and ground the top down untill the spring came out. Put it back etc and now nothing shows up on the guage. even when i adjust it the needle does up and down a bit when the car is about to stall.

its stange the line going to it doesnt go through the fuel filter. that line goes some were else, i presume other end of fuel rail.

Is something wronf with this?

What car is this?

Normally the fuel goes like this:

fuel filter => dampener (optional) => rail => pressure regulator => return line

You are supposed to replace original fuel pressure regulator with aftermarket.
What you could do is make an adapter out of spare pressure regulator and feed it to new regulator, which then relieves to the return line.

One way to make the adapter is to grind the top off (until what you are left is flange with a hole in the middle, and obviously bottom bit with O ring intact) and tap a fitting into that hole that connect to the fpr.

rb20det. I was told if you grind the top off the stock one and take the spring out it is no longer a regulator and fuel can flow through freely?

If the fpr is at the end of the rail and you have put the new one in the return line, have you got it facing the wrong way? To test if the factory one is just bypassing as you expect it to pull the return line off the end and check that fuel flows out (into a container for safety) when you turn the key on and the fuel pump starts.

sorted now thanks everyone. I had put the unit in the wrong way even after following instrutions(arrows and chinese writing) turns out arrows going in and out of the unit in the picture doesnt represent fuel flow haha

I helped pick up a cefiro for a mate.

Luckily it had a flat battery when we tried to start it...!!!!!

Lucky because we opened the bonnet, connected jumper leads and then cranked it over...

There was a big spray of fuel!
Fuel was spraying out from the almost new aftermarket fuel pressure regulator in all directions from the gasket that sealed the 2 parts of the regulator together.

If it didn't need a jump start the car probably would have caught on fire while it was being driven to its new owner!

The guy selling the car said "yeah I thought that regulator was probably a piece of junk but it was cheap off trademe"

FARK!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Absolutely nothing. He was scammed into thinking that it will give him extra 10hp or whatever.

If you've fitted a bigger pump and it outflows the stock reg, then the best fix is to do what the factory does on bigger motors.
That's to modify the pump circuit with a resistor that's switched out at higher loads.
Contrary to popular belief it's NOT just to make it run quieter, it's to save wear on the pump, to not outflow the reg and to not outflow the return line.
The factory way is always best because it's designed by engineers rather than aftermarket parts salesmen.

did they tell you that, if the internal diaphram in the fpr leaks, it will send fuel pumpin out of your freshly grinded hole? AFAIK fpr's are sealed units for a reason.
surely a better option would be to spend $40 and get a proper adaptor like this...

sure it's D1 Spec, but it's gotta be safer. I'm all for cheap/free mods, but some corners should not be cut
