7A VS 4A rods

Postby FANGIN » Fri Jul 23, 2010 9:30 am

Alright so after a quick search I came up with ZIP.

Anyone got any decent information e.g. not just opinions on just what a stock 7A-FE rod will stand up compared to a silvertop 4A-GE rod?

Factory redline is around 6,400ish rpm on a 7A-FE, is this because the rods cant handle the revs or is it that the head doesn't breath enough to warrant reving it any further.

It has more to do that toyota designed it for specific torque curve to make it more drivable.

Rods would probably handle similar,

but the rod bolts on the 7A rods will definatly not handle many more RPM's.

they are narrowed in the centre, completly different design to 4A rod bolts,

7A ones are threaded into the rod so there is no not from memory.

You have to see it to belive the skinnyness in the centre of the rod bolt.

also FWIW,

yeah - I vote for just using tgp 7a rods, new bolts (ARP if you can get them) and let the beast run!
Unless you buzz the engine they will probably be fine for a season or 2
7a's are pretty cheap!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I just ordered some new rods for my new setup and ordered a few extra sets of 7A rods. They are just like the spool ones with ARP2000 bolts.
Also a few hundy cheaper than getting from spool.

Spool rods have gone up in price a lot. The 7afe ones used to be 450AUD.

Engine I've got already has ARP rod bolts :D . Might just chuck it in & if it goes bang I can always throw back in the Black Top.

Cheers guys

i ran 5-8psi on 5afe rods in my 5afte, that lasted 3 years with no issues ( apart from the knobs who bought it off me rooting about everything else) recently bought it back, dropped a 7afte in it (standard rods and bolts) and it running fine at 8psi with a decent thrashing now and then
