Cause of gearbox whine?

Postby Vertigo » Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:56 pm

Sup. My AW11 has developed a significant whine in first gear, somewhat also in second, but fine in the rest. Fairly high pitched, whines throughout the rev range.

Any ideas what could be the issue? Ill provide more info if needed, just not sure what else to note :P

I'm no gearbox expert but most likely worn bearings on the gears, those long roller bearings or needle bearings or whateverthefuck they're called.

Worn gears are suppose to make a much lower tone noise, especially when coming to a stop at the lights.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Bearings in box or possible the gears are not meshing correctly, possibly because of worn gears.

Easy fix, just find a c52 out of a corolla (easier to find) with an A series engine to ensure bellhousing is correct. chop it up to allow shifter to work & swap boxes

Bearing & gear noise from wear builds gradually, it takes years for it to be called 'significant', so is this a sudden new noise or one that has been slowly increasing?
How is it when sitting still in neutral pedal up, then in 1st with the pedal down?
Any noise or hum disappear when the pedal is depressed, that's from worn bearings? Gears that are OK can make noise when the bearings are worn, cause the gears will be a bit out of alignment.

Some gearboxes use tapered bearings which need to be shimmed correctly, When they get worn the gears don't mesh properly so whine and get worse and worse. When you pull them to bits you'll see the gears with uneven wear.
Sometimes the noise just comes from a worn out input bearing.

from memory in C series gearbox there are no tapered bearings except for the diff.
The bearings are either roller/ball or needle. From memory the input shafts hangs on two ball bearings, while the output shaft on ball bearing 5th gear side and roller bearing diff side. I could be wrong here.

hard to say. just bought the car a couple of months ago, and ive just noticed it, tho it could have been doing so earlier, a little less loudly. yea, it all goes away with the clutch in, even when rolling.
