4a-fe c56 same as blacktop c56?

Postby gmacrae » Sat Jul 31, 2010 11:45 am

Hey guys. Im trying to get a decent gearbox in my corolla and basically want a low km blacktop 5 or 6 speed box. I've found one from an ae111 levin 4a-fe, I understand it will bolt up fine but are there any differences internally to the blacktop c56?

from what ive found c56, c52 etc relate to the ratios. but the final drive can be different

for example. you can get a c56 in both a starlet glanza and ae111 but the starlet has a 3.7 and the ae111 has a 4.3. actual gear ratios are the same, and obviously the case is different as well

yes C56, or C52 etc refers to the ratios of the actual gears themselves and has no bearing on the diff ratio in the box at all.

You can figure out what gearset & diff ratio it has by tuning the input shaft and counting the turns compared to the output.

Just jam a piece of thick wire, or a thin screw driver into the diff where the axles go to lock both sides of the diff together. Then count how many revolutions it takes on the input shaft to equal one revolution on the output, do that in each gear.

cheers guys... so a glanza has a c56 with 3.7 final drive? Thats cool... has anyone used one of them in a corolla/levin with the 4age bell? That would drop the revs down a fair bit

And having just checked I will now say I am sure they are different. According to the TRD Levin Trueno Bible.

if you want an A series c box with the 3.7 final drive, grab one from an ae110

What the bible, and a host of other references tell you Warwick is that the ratios in the boxes on 4AGE & 4AFE powered Levin are different. It doesn't state that they are both C56's.

So if I have a silvertop powered Corolla, and I want a nice rev happy diff ratio, what should I be trying to burgle a gearbox out of?

(current gearbox is original to car so ae92 gt sedan, previously bigport).

I didn't say they had C52's.

BZ/Bling has just given an example of one with a C50 which would relate to the differing ratios you're quoting.

so it should have c52 4.3, so best you can do is get a c56 4.3 from a facelift silvertop or blacktop etc. more evenly spaced ratios

Does any C5* have a final drive lower than 4.3? Or would anything else fit?

Not necessarily 4.3. I have found a couple of 4.059 ratios in C52s. Best to measure as toyota played mix-n-match lots.

But yes, the best you will get as a bolt in replacement with no modification is a C56 with 4.3 diff ratio.

With a rev limit of 7800 that will give the following top speeds in each gear: 62.05 103.18 141.13 190.54 241.04
