I would tentatively suggest that an sw20 would be pretty easy to get down into the 10's or even 9's given its mid rear layout which should provide good grip off the line and the ability of the 3sgte engine ro make good power as long as its not connected to a caldina :P :P

I seem to remember quite a few sw20's running low 12's with just a bit of boost and a CT20b

There is a red SW20 that has run into the 10's here in NZ. Can't find link though

EDIT: found this: http://www.performancecar.co.nz/articles/import-drag-racing-records/import-drag-racing-records
But I'm sure there was a Red Gen3 with over 300rwkw that ran a 10 as well

LOL you make that sound like those are good times for the mods!! You can go fast for few mods if you are willing to play with fire, 30psi through a GT30 to run 12s in a AWD is a bit of a shocker imho 8O

My bad it was 28 psi...

Umm, 28psi is no small amount still 8O I did 12s with a GT30 running 14psi in a car which is only RWD!

MR2s have epic potential, and of course there are things like the Croydens Supra etc which did 9s

He already had another engine that was going into the Celica, so he just cranked up the boost until the motor blew. But Toyotas being Toyotas, it took 6 months until engine failure, good times.

Red Gen3 SW20 (BOOSTN) had just shy of 400kw atw but never did a 10 sec pass as far as I'm aware. Did plenty of low 11's before busting a driveshaft at the nats which is the last time I saw it. There was a green pearl Gen2 SW20 from the south island that did a 10.9 (quickest SW20 in NZ) and there's BBY4RE that has a fair few ponies as well. Also certain NZEFI had a very quick AW11.

I don't think any (Toyota engine'd) 4cyl Toyota has gone faster than TIMID (4AGTE + T51R) and as for fastest Toyota 4wd.....I wouldn't expect much given the number of fairly modified Celicas doing the same times as near stock SW20's

Get another SW and have a go :P I spend too much time working on other people's cars nowadays and my MR2 is just a place for me to put stuff that shouldn't be on the floor

I dont think MR2s will ever get much faster than 10s.

Look at what the likes of 6-7 second cars run...

They usally have the car tubbed to all hell, with tires almost as wide as the whole car.

Cant do too much in the way of fitting tires that wide, when you've got the engine and gearbox in the middle too.

Fast 'normal' RWD cars all seem to run drag car type gearboxes too, not much you can do in the way of that for a trans axle I guess.

Not nearly as easy to make the drivetrain stronger, compared to say fitting a powerglide (or whatever) gearbox and some stupidly big/strong diff that takes up the whole back of the car anyway, for a 'normal' RWD car.

tube frame it and put the engine in the front, if rayglass can call their car a celica theres no reason you couldnt paint some pop ups on it and call it a mr2

or take some inspiration from crazy honda drag cars

Rawwwwrr T51R on a stock bottom end 4AGTE??? 8O

It was actually running an HKS GT3040 with a tiny turbine housing and a big purple "HKS air suction funnel" which made it look very aggressive.

I can't see why it'd be too hard to get an SW20 doing 9s, hell if there is a 10s SW20 in NZ with only 300wkw on a pretty small GT3071R. I've often thought that an MR2 would be one of the best platforms for a "street/drag" car.

It's been done in peurto rico, there's one with a front mounted 2JZGTE and tubbed to shit rear end that runs 7s or something like that.

I'll find a link later.

Not really showing what's possible with a mid mounted transaxle though...

The problem of which is trying to make everything strong enough when getting past that 300kw or whatever mark I guess.... And working in that engine bay when something breaks

For the cost of beefing everything up, it's probably just better off to put the motor in the front anyway

yeah, people dont always do things cos its easier or better though do they :D

theres gotta be options for transaxles out there is what im saying, perhaps not as affordable or available as RWD stuff but not nothing.

i want an mr2 now
