Failed WOF on Tyres - Really Annoyed

Exactly two years & one month ago I bought a set of Eagle F1 gs-d3 tyres for a lot of money. They guy at the tyre shop reckoned I should get at least 45,000kms out of them on my GTT so long as they were looked after (regular alignments, tyre rotations etc), which I did.

Went for a WOF today and the front tyres failed, with the left tyre just starting to wear through to the canvas in patches. I'm infuriated given I've only done 25,000kms since purchase.

It this the result of the tyre or the alignments - I'm leaning towards alignments given the amount of treat over the rest of the tyre? What should I expect out of a set of tyres like these - 25,000kms seems ridiculously poor.

Depends on the roads your are on and how you drive it, with regular rotations, alignments etc I get max of 30,000 out of my 195/50 15's on a Mazda Demio. NZ has some pretty coarse roads that don't really help tyre wear, although my car gets driven pretty hard which wouldn't help the wear rate.

Proxes4 lasted 10,000kms for me lol
T1Rs so far have almost done 10,000 and almost no wear.

Way you drive will change it, and maybe incorrect allignment.. But at the end of the day not much you can do about it, other than choose a new tire shop.

Photo of tyre? I would lean towards alignment probably.

When was the last alignment and how did you not notice it wearing that bad in patches? That would stand out like a sore thumb, doesn't matter what tyres you get if you don't check them over occasionally you won't notice uneven wear. I check my tyres (same as yours) every couple of months for tell tale signs they aren't wearing even. Not sure on KM's but i've had them probably 20-25k (guess) with 2/3 wear on front and 1/3 wear on rear.

As others have said it all depends on how you drive it etc.... 25000kms could be about right for sticky tyres, Was it just the front tyres worn? Do you rotate and check regularly?

Our rep went through some version of toyo tyres in the work legacy in 20000km's

The roads are probably an even mix of smooth & coarse chip.

Back tyres are 3mm. I check then every few months or so in between warrants. Haven't noticed any irregular wear.

Driving style; yes I do tend to corner quick fast on windy roads and motorway offramps; but like I said it's 80kph - 100kph open road kind of stuff most of the time. It's not like I can pull skids in the tyres either given I'm in a 4wd.

I've had two alignments so far (every 10,000kms as instructed) and was about to book in the third. I was told at my last alignement the tyres wouldn't need rotating for another 7,000kms - 10,000kms (which would be now).

I check the air pressure when the car is cold every month too - running 35psi in the front and 36psi in the back, as instructed (215/45/17's).

The problem you have is like may late model cars you get excess wear on the inside of the tyre even though the rest of the tread is wearing pretty flat if the car is driven hard. Those probably should have been flipped on the rims rather than rotated last time, otherwise you get all the wear concentrated on the inside edge when just swapping front to rear. Factory or lowered springs? Seems more common on factory cars.

Its a b*tch, but thats how they tend to wear even with alignment in spec. And its not just F1s, majority of tyres so and they wear like that on the front more than the rear

My eagle, ~3mm of tread left (below), even wear, so it is possible, I don't think blaming the tyre is right if I can get even wear. I run 36-40psi in mine. I know sweet f**k all about about alignments, but that to me looks like turning on the spot, or toe in? If that's where the tyres a pointed slightly inwards? Dunno, just working out how it would scrub the edge like that. Compared to mine, i'd say its been wearing the edge for quite a while.

My old work hiace van used to do it ~95 model, both insides would wear faster. Current ~2000 hiace doesn't have the problem.

Is it worn exactly the same both sides? If the otherside is fine that makes me believe even more so the alignment might be at fault. Hit any decent pot holes?

that sucks. heaps of tread, just that inner wall has been owned.

go see an alignment specialist

edit: good news is they're $179inc new now, pretty cheap.

Tyres on my Caldina wear like that too, it's always the inside shoulder of the fronts.

Mine's lowered on Tiens, and correctly aligned. Anyone else with a Caldina find the same thing?

Interesting the type of tire, I have had SUPER fast wear on GSD3's as well. In my old Trueno and my ITR got from full to half tread in less than 3000kms

I bought an expensive set of tyres fro a road car once,
lasted less than 1/2 what the tyre guy told me they should last,

Now I use cheap shit new tyres,
as I dont drive the road car anywhere near the limit of the tyres anyway,
and they last as long or longer.

i have the worlds worst wet weather tyre (well i hope it is anyway, any worse could be fatal) on the corolla and have to rotate F/L every 500-1000km, to even the wear rate as i had to do a tight u-turn on coarse chip each morning,and on simaler surface each nite.......... tyre wear might even up a bit, as i don't live there no more.

I used to live on Cragie ave, and had an Escort with a locked diff...
I found the hand brake left flat spots, and power flicks wore out the tyres fast :?

Looks to me like it could be toe/negative camber related, you cant really blame wear patterns on the tyre.
