Oh please, it's a casual and social track day, not multicar sprints or a race meet.

IF I were someone that was going to make this my first trackday, after reading your post I would probably think

"maybe I shouldn't go on the track, I don't want to have to spend $1200 on slicks"
"I only have road tires, and this guy says once they over-heat I might lose control, I don't want to take that risk"

FWIW: I'm currently competing in a sealed autocross series and doing quite well in class and only using road tires (one round was done on a set of 14/55/185 monzas).


$1200 please try $100 a corner for used V8 Supercar slicks and I'm not saying anyone has to use them again everyone should have a choice.How is using slicks mean there serious please i've been doing these semi-serious and casual days for over 10 years and have used all of the advertised tyres and I'd definitely for safety go for more grip as when the speeds are that much higher grip is always better you stop quicker aswell you can't go wrong with slicks again its a choice I'm not saying anyone has to use them I am simply saying you should have a choice.

Not sure why you wouldnt encourage motorsport tires being used at any track day. Often the first comment a newbie makes is "gawd road tires are sh1t" :lol:

Sure it adds expense having to take a spar set or road wheels or trailer the car but my lord why flounder on skiddy road rubber when you can be grinning from ear to ear on the good stuff :)

Then there's the problem of road rubber melting to mush if they are over heated. At least race tires dont die so easily :P

Hi all
Thanks for your comments regarding slicks they are duly noted.
This is a clubsport basic motorsport event, and also an oppurtunity for people new to the track to bring their daily drivers and have a go.
As PC mentioned your average road car is not designed for slick tyres.
I made the decision based on 12 years of running motorsport events and taking seriously into consideration the budget and experience of our first time track drivers.

If you choose to bring semi slicks I can assure you there are many sticky compounds that will suit a novice driver along with an experienced driver. So if you wish to have more grip either buy, beg, or borrow a set of semi slicks and come play.

As Warwick has mentioned the rules are set in the official event regulations and will not be changed. As I have previously mentioned if you wish to discuss the use of slicks on a non race car please email me.

Just regarding the discussion around tyres - my first ever track day at Manfeild was in a standard road car with really cheap and nasty road tyres (on 17's even) and I still had a ball! 8)

I wasn't there to be competitive - I was there to try out the track and learn how to drive at speed in a controlled environment! :wink:

This is just a fun day, right? :P

I had stupid amounts of fun that day - I actually managed 100 laps of the track by the end of the day and I came away with a huge grin and vowed to go back many times again...

I have since done a couple of dual car sprint events on those same tyres, so actually in a competitive environment and I still had fun!

Newbies shouldn't be scared by tyre choice, because it is what you make of it...

I will be at this particular track day in a race car - first time on Manfeild in this particular car too for me, so I'm really looking forward to getting back out there in a proper set up!

I will also take anyone out in the passenger seat who is keen!

Well - unless we start getting payments very shortly, there will be no spots as I'll have to cancel.

Whats happening guys? I've had 3 payments, and its nearly September? The deposit is due shortly, and I dont have the money to cover it myself.

Hi all.
I have five entry forms sitting on my desk at the moment.

At this stage I am seriously considering opening this day up to other clubs so we can fill some spots. I had over 35 people email me saying they were coming... I'd really like to see those entires (and payment) back please. :)

Put it this way people... If I don't get at least 20 more entries by 3 September the day will be canned.

WRT scrutineering, if your car meets WOF standards then you're generally pretty sweet.
From past experience the only things that have stood out to me is to make sure that your battery is fully secure (if that means putting a bit of cardboard in the way then clamping it tighter to secure it then do that, if not find a better solution), and also to make sure your helmet is upto the required NZ standard and not outdated. Also make sure you have a fire extinguisher bolted in somewhere.
