Failed WOF on Tyres - Really Annoyed

BZ Bling - how many kays have you done on yours? The guy at the WOF station said my rears were measured at 3mm and doing the same thing which means presumeably there's tonnes of tread on the rest of the tyre so I'll do what wde_bdy suggested.

I think it's been lowered - not sure it it's from factory or aftermarket but it's a perfect height. The suspension / springs don't look like anything special underneath.

Good to see the price has come down on these tyres. Back when I bought them they were $260 each so having a mild panic. I hate spending money on my car.

Here's one of my alignment print-outs. Not sure what all the numbers mean in terms or how much it's cambered vs. normal, but I did ask for the guy to set it up for open road driving when he asked:

Camber of front left isn't even within spec.... wonder why they didn't fix that.

Not sure on KMs for my tyres tbh a good 2 years though possibly 3 so ~20k or more.

So all 4 tyres have inner wear?

As for these tyres, they have been replaced with what is apparently a better tyre with. Forget what model, but someone will know. Can still get some sizes though, but country of manufacturer varies from China to Germany.

My F1's have always worn dead flat even on a significantly lowered vehicle with very stiff springs, FWD with beam axle rear though. For some reason they weren't too keen on the track day my wife did.

That one had 5,000k's before it got to the track and was a bin job by the end of the day.

cause its not adjustable , unless you use camber bolts 8)
obviously from your alignment readout your car is lowered , when you went in to get your alignment , your initial readings were of negative toe , this also wears the inside of your tyre , combined with the negative camber is a factor of your tyre wearing on the inside .
Remeber alignments can go out all the time as nz roads are absolute craphouse , and bearing in mind you have a 4wd performance vehicle , which have many moveable parts , as times have changed so too have cars and more moveable parts and stress on these parts causes movement , remember your alignment is set by a treaded rod and nut locking it in .
I would consider getting 2 alignments a year done , my brothers wrx if i dont do at least 2 alignments ayear it wears out faster aswell , but he doesnt mind , cause he drives it how he drives and thats mad
people can never give a definitive answer on how long tyres will last , because there is too many variables , oversight on his behalf , but dont string him up and shoot him for it .
As for how long they should last , anywhere inbetween 20,000 and 50,000 is a good range , if you think you're worse off think of porsche cayenne customers , they 275/40R20 tyres on those is projected to last between 8,000 and 16,000 kms

id would run them harder as well, (40psi)

But as pete has pointed out its the alignment that has caused most of the damage.

You're up for some new tyres there mate, as some one said earlier in the tread a rotation side to side about 6-9 months ago may have helped a little.

does rotating the tyres throw the alignment out? have always wondered that!

no it hasnt , when the toe has been adjusted to where it was needed this changes where the camber is sitting slightly

Next time, just take your car to THASHZ. He's bloody good at what he does.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

FL left toe has also changed but no change in camber?

Not doubting you just keen to understand it.

I get the wagons tyres rotated every 10K while it's serviced. This comes around in approx 2 months usually :?

Have gone from using Toyo T1R's on the old car to some cheap and nasties on the Carib(ATR Achilles or something). They work OK and are affordable so I can deal with that.

Definately keep up with the rotation schedule and check tyre pressures weekly.

Changing camber changes the toe, not the other way round.
Definitly a wheel alignment issue has caused that wear, combination of toe out and negative camber, but mostly toe out.

Easy way to see if your tyres are going to wear unevenly is drive it down the highway in a straight line long enough to get some heat in the tyres... then stick your hand on the tyres and see if it is hotter on one side or the other. If it is, then the wheel alignment needs work else you will get uneven wear.

sloppy bits in the steering/suspension will affect alignment, so check rack ends, tierod ends, suspension mounts etc.

yeah plus one for a wheel alignment specialist, the tyre place will say its within spec and the W/A guy will set it up to drive / wear properly. you might pay a bit more but as you can see you pay more later anyway.

i cant see your original pics now but i thought it might have been a touch underinflated also, as the outside shows more wear than the centre too (though not as bad as the inner)

Totally agree - although suprisingly the inital readings on my last three alignments had barely moved. I take it fairly slow around town & over bumps etc. which I think helps.

THA SHZ wrote:I would consider getting 2 alignments a year done

I've had 3 alignments over 2 years / 25,000kms - which is why I'm annoyed the tyres haven't lasted as long as I expected.

I run 36psi which is what the tyre shop suggested - check it every month.

40psi seems quite high - would that push the pressure right onto the limit when the tyre heats up?
