Price when your car was new?

Postby snwtoy » Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:42 am

Does anyone have any good reference websites for checking what the new cost of a car was?

Specifically I'm looking for Caldina GTT of course, but also want to compare it to a mate's poverty spec 2001 Audi A4 for a laugh.

I found one site which puts the manual GTT at $22k, but I have no idea what currency that would be, possibly US (website was .net).

GTTs were 2,688,000yen for the manual and 2,798,000yen for an auto when they first came out, so about $NZ45-48,000 at today's exchange rate.

That's actually pretty cheap given how much they still cost now for a 10+ year old used one. I wonder how much they would have sold for here had they been offered NZ-new.

My old Mercedes in my spec was $125,000 new, I paid $8000 for it in 2006.

Can you say depreciation?

Well the ST205 initially retailed here for NZ$96,000 in 1994 (plus the optional aircon and leather), later reducing to $83,000. I would've expected the Caldina to be similar.

Kinda explains why they were not offered NZ new...

I think one of the biggest depreciating cars are BMWs, E39 540s were $206k brand new in 1995-1997, from around 2008 onwards higher kms examples were only starting from $5k - now you could almost get a good example for $5-6k.

One of the better value holding vehicles at the moment are Mazda 6/Atenzas, for a $35k new car even 2002 models today are still $12-13k+ second hand.
