Race car heater core - worth replacing?

Postby Hachiroku » Thu Sep 23, 2010 11:56 am

The heater core in my AA60 project is stuffed. I figure I can probably do without it but may need a demister. Is it worth replacing the core or should I just arsehole the whole heater / blower / air con setup from under the dash and use some Rain X anti-fog? Any other suggestions?

I've kept everything in my race car. Heater, blower, air con the lot.

If you're going for maximum weight reduction, or if you've got a bit of roll cage running through the heater core area then ditch it. Otherwise the sacrifice of how useful having everything working really isn't worth it.

Demisting with cold air is arse. As is doing a long drive to a motorsport event on a cold day in a freezing cold car.

As per above, rainx defog is the single most useless product I've ever used myself. It was about as useful for improving vision as spray painting black paint on the inside of my windscreen (used it in a Swift road car that had dropped the guts of the heater core).

Many of the racecar drivers I've seen could drop 25kg out of their cars by cutting back on the pies

I could drop 10kg out of my car by eating healthy.

Mix some shampoo and water, use that instead of rain-x.
Rain-X anti fog is fuggen useless, their outdoor windscreen stuff works great though.

Aa60 carina/celica heater core will be same as same year/series corona
I ripped everything out in my racecar...after my first wet raceday I put the fan/demister system back in!
At the very least disconnect/remove the heater core if you really have to and keep the demister system!
In Christchurch I would keep the heater system

As other posts says there are plenty of ways of getting rid of weight
If you wanted the lightest possible car you wouldn't go with an AA60 (I have an aa63 racecar)

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

you can get small industrial blower fans which weigh about 1kg or so which is a lot lighter than a factory blower system. just take a hot feed of air from somewhere like behind the oil cooler or radiator.

oil cooler would probably be a more constant temperature.

Would definitely keep it if it wasn't buggered. Not really looking to save weight, just wasn't sure if it was worth getting it recored / buying a new one if I only want the demister function. Anybody got a decent core they want to sell me?

removing the entire heater is a complete waste of time and effort, and negates any weight saving.one only needs wet shoes to fog the screen up (especially passenger/co-driver shoes with exhaust underfoot).

stripped mine out of levin, and has a small weight benifit on warm, dry days, but a waste of time if there is so much as a speck of moisture about.
kp60 has the heater core and blower in the same unit, much smaller and lighter than original and is what i will use to replace my absent unit.
