Labour weekend Police warning

Postby sergei » Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:53 am

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10682248

So-so news:
The police intend to take action against anyone driving more than 4km/h faster than ruling speed limits throughout the long weekend, down from their standard allowance of 10km/h.

Good news:
Police will use cameras this Labour weekend to catch drivers straying across centre-lines as part of a multi-pronged campaign to tackle the road toll.

Looks like they're using some dodgy stats, last queens birthday weekend the weather was so bad no-one left home, that probably has a lot more to do with the low road toll than the 4km/h rule.

It would be interesting to see a count of how many cars were on the road last queens birthday compared to previous years, I bet it was far lower than usual.

They should be targeting those that go under the speed limit as well. They cause just as many accidents as speeders. Nothing worse than travelling at 100km to come up on someone doing 80km on the other side of a corner.

Road toll won't improve much until they stop being biased towards speeders.

They are, while that article doesnt state it, in a news article on the radio this morning, one of the top cops confirmed they would be pulling over slow drivers too

On friday I came around a corner on the Dunedin Northern Motorway to find an old 80's poo yellow starlet doing 50. To say I nearly shat myself is an understatement!

Driver was an old guy, shouldn't have been on the road in my opinion.

Don't agree with penalising those doing 4kmh over the limit though, unless the govt/police are going to retrofit every car with HUD's then it just means people focus on the road less, cause they're worried about getting a ticket.

Common sense tells you that 4k over the limit isn't much to worry about, and probably isn't going to cause a crash.

I think the cops if they focus on a amount over the limit should be forced to also ticket those who are under the limit by the same amount. i.e if they ticket for those 10k over they also ticket those 10k under, unless they have a very good reason, like there's snow on the road or poor visability.

One kept the trigger down pointed at me for 10 or so seconds (valentine one was going crazy) so I gradually sped up to get his hopes up

wish the police wouldn't make a huge deal about this sort of thing, I thoroughly enjoyed driving up state highway 2 amongst a assload of paranoid traffic doing 80kms :/

Carib's so slow, I don't trouble the cops much now. I have seen a lot more cars being pulled over since friday which is a good thing I guess.

There were definitely more cops between Auckland and National park. Usually I'd be lucky to see one or two, this trip passed about 10, as well as 6 speed cameras (4 one direction, two on our way back).

Didn't seem to deter the idiots though.

I wish road campaigns would put more thought into educating drivers about being polite and thoughtful. Things like:

* pull over when there are 2 or more cars following you
* how to turn right on the open road
* how to overtake properly and safely

etc

I've been in the middle of around 14 cars stuck behind someone towing a caravan. They didn't pull over for about 8km and there was no where for anyone to pass. First place to pass a cop came flying past everyone, got to the front and pulled them over

Went from Whakatane to Waihi and back on the weekend, only saw two cops the whole time.. :?

i got flashed on my way home, halfway between te kauwhata and auckland. stupid thing is, i had passed a cop on the side of the road, sitting on 100 as i checked my speedo, before passing the camera wagon, still going 100. and it still flashed me.

i called the po's and explained the situation, and they seemed sympathetic, but shrug :/
