Beams 3sge vs Sr20det vs 3tgte

Postby Babz » Mon Nov 15, 2010 5:40 pm

Hey guys. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on which engine i should implant into my 1982 Carina TA63. It will be used as a daily driver with trips to the tracks every now and then. I have trying to decide but just can not make up my mind. They all seem to have plus and minus.

But for the money involved in sourcing a 3tgte and getting it up to spec wouldnt i be better of transplanting a newer motor? I am wanting around the 250 wheel hp mark and all three can achieve this easily with a couple of upgrades.

Is the 3sge beams motor any good? meaning will it perform just as good as a s13 sr20det?

Theres an AE86 with a 3sge Beams.
Its a track only car running 150kw atw.
Sounds pretty sweet.

Although an SR20det would be quicker, more reliable, and plenty of aftermarket support. Go for the SR.

If you prefer Toyota power I would actually go with the 3T-GTE, its a much cheaper fitment job as it bolts in and the money saved can be used for a rebuild with forged pistons.

depends on your budget i guess. sr better engine in everyway but they did come out with 3t turbos so thats what I would use.i reckon you could buy a 3t and rebuild it for the same price as buying an sr.

yeh but they are a dog - speaking from experience.

sr would be your best option by far. or a 4agze??

defiantly the coolest but if the goal is 250hp at the wheels bit of an overkill and $$$

Will probably struggle to get the 250hp at the wheels you'd be aiming at, but they do sound pretty sweet at 8k in old cars.

Most are around 118-130rwkws in standard trim, but very reliable.

you wont get 250hp at the wheels with a Beams 3S-GE cheaply. After a set of quads and outboard injectors maybe, it'll probably be 180hp at best at the wheels with a decent intake and headers/exhaust.

Phil - there are a few standard Beams with G4's and quads that have pulled over 200HP in NZ... But 250 would take quite a bit more development.

3ts are a step in the wrong direction.

and i dont like cross breeding

so beams and 6 speed

i have a mate with one in a ae85 with quads and a link G4 its 200 HP at the wheels and more than fast enough as a rack car let alone a street car.

or 4agte, cheap easy been done a million times before so there is heaps on info, mine makes 230whp and its pretty standard just ht18/t3 450cc injectors and a link. more than fast enough
